Prom pictures and Bloody Red Heart

With my real date, Lex.

Andrew and I. Don't ask why he's wearing those sunglasses. I couldn't tell ya.

We were getting really sick of taking pictures.

Andrew, me, my friend, Seers (I guess you know her as Sarah), and her boyfriend, Max.

Yaaaay. And, while we're on the topic of pictures.... My editor, Amy Goldwasser, sent some photos of the cast of Bloody Red Heart (the stage play version of the essay anthology I contributed to). I didn't get to go see it, but it's surreal enough just to read about. My fourteen-year-old diary came to life!

The girl with the reddish-blondish hair, leaning on the girl with the hat, played me. The black girl on the left played the boy in my story.

Here's a close-up of Chiara Russi, credited with the leading role of Hayley Hoover, age 16.

I want to take another opportunity to thank those of you who read and comment on this blog for greatly increasing my quality of living. It took me over half an hour to read all your prom stories this morning (some were hilarious, some were heartbreaking, most were a combination of both) and I was positively thrilled. Thank you, guys. It genuinely means a lot.

People didn't like your dress? What's wrong with them? I think you look pretty! And the dress is great!

Your dress was gorgeous and so was your hair. im sure somewhere on the internet is a video of your play.

I can't believe that people didn't like your dress. I'm super, unbelievably picky with dresses, and I love it.
People are stupid.

I love your dress!!! It's so beautiful!

Hi Hayley, I just wanted to say I love your dress, the sequins make it epic, and beautiful! Last year I read "Sloppy Firsts" by Megan McCafferty and I didn't really feel the need to follow the series, after reading what you said about how good they are I finally made my way over to the library to get it, I'm so hooked it isn't even funny. You are amazing, and though I can't pinpoint exactly why, you are SUCH a role model to me.

Stefan said...

zomg you look amazing! though the boy looks a little whatever. you should have gone with the dog instead :)

Aww I LOVE your dress!

Also, congratulations on the play, it must feel so amazing to have a character based on your writing :)

Fabulous dress.
And I'd just like to say how amazing those trees in the background look. And your dog is cute too.

How could people not like your dress?! If I had enough guts to wear a dress out, I would pick something similiar. Your hair was how I would want mine, too.
Your real date.. what a looker :) hahaha
and, reading your blog increases (and I speak for all of the readers) qualities of lives :D (assuming that sentence even made sense, and all..)
I always look forward to a blog and/or a video from you! You seem amazing!

That dress really is fantastic. I literally can't comprehend how anyone could ridicule that. I guess it was just high school-induced temporary insanity.

Johnny Motif said...

Let's say hypothetically they made Bloody Red Heart into a major motion picture. Who would you want to play you?

Also I don't see what the problem with the dress is. It looks very lovely on you.

How could people *not* like your dress? It's awesome!!!!!!

You looked amazing :)

Sarah said...

HOW can people say they didn't like your dress? It was so pretty! It was fantastic--you know how some gown-types of dresses can come off as really tacky and overwhelming? Yours wasn't like that at all! The skirt is so fluffy and beautiful and it looked like you could, like, glide in it.

My eloquence is overhwelming, I know, I know. But really. Like, floating. Think dementors. Just more faaaaaabulous~

I don't know what made me type that out, haha.

Hello darling,
Your dress is absolutely gorgeous, though my flatmate also described it as 'interesting' :)
Living in Scotland I never had to go through the inconveniences of a prom, and I'm kind of thankful for that now.
I also just want to say that however much you appreciate our comments, we appreciate your blogs more! They're always so entertaining and honest, and when I'm working through my Google Reader I save yours for last :D
Much love, Cara xxx

Hayley, that dress is made of awesome, and amazing, and fabulosity and many other creative synonyms all mixed together and sprinkled in, ummmm, princess dust. I realise that was a verrry incoherent description because it is 2 in the morning but what I am trying to say is I liked it, and anyone who didn't like it must be either a boy, terribly unimaginative when it comes to clothes, or just plain notsome.

Sorry the evening you had in it wasn't so great, but I think the answer is to wear this dress at every opportunity. Wear it to do your grocery shopping. Tell people that princesses do not dress down for grocery shopping and how DARE they suggest otherwise.

This post made me think that the saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words," is definitely true. In the first picture with you and Lex, you look genuinely happy and like you're just laughing, having fun. In the next one with Andrew you look like you're fake-smiling.

I agree, you should've gone with Lex. Dogs can't grind, PLUS you would've had an excuse to slip outside every once in awhile for Lex's bathroom breaks.

BUT you are left with the consolation that you were ~pretty in pink on the night of your senior prom.

Anonymous said...

okay, well i saw these pictures on facebook a couple days ago, and i feel less awky commenting on them here than there, so i'll give you my first impressions.

--"her hair and makeup is flawless. wow."
--"i personally wouldn't choose the dress but it looks fabulous on her. it takes a pretty dashing (can that adjective be used for a female? whatevs, i say it can) girl to pull off all those sequins and pink and she did it."
--"is that her man-boy-thing? awww...errr...hmmm. why the glasses? they look kind of douchey? he looks kind of douchey. but no, i shouldn't say that about her man-boy-thing; i think she likes him."

ha, that actually reminds me -- the two friends i went to banquet with's dates were both wearing absolutely ridiculous sunglasses, as anyone with EYES could see, but it was clear by the way they wore them they thought they were the proverbial Sugar Honey Iced Tea. i felt a surge of pride when my (considerably more mature) date regarded them and dryly quipped, "well, i guess i should have worn glasses. i feel left out." they looked at him haughtily, not getting it at all, while i bit back a laugh.

Your dress fondly reminds me of a cupcake, in the most awesome way possible of course! I liked it, and I don't know what your friends were thinking. Eh, whatever.

you have no idea how many dresses I had to go through to find this on google

Your dress is so pretty! My prom was a lot like yours (senior class orgy on the dance floor, me wanting to puke), but I snuck into my junior prom - I had to wait in the bathroom with my two friends who also snuck in until dinner was over so we wouldn't get caught - but hey we got in for free!

And also, it sounds so cool about the whole play thing. I bought "Red" a few months back and I loved the whole thing, especially your writing- the way you described the emotions and actions, it almost seemed like it was meant for the stage.

Your make-up doesn't look at all as awful as you made it sound. Here's a prom story for you, well not really a story, just an absurdity.

My school's prom this year is on June 2, which is our second-to-last day of school, and also a Tuesday. Yes, you read that right, a Tuesday. Not only is there school the day of prom, there is also school the day after prom. The day befoere prom you ask? That would be our Kennywood day (amusement park you may or may not have heard of).

Not that I'm going anyway. My date and I (if I actually would have one) would not be allowed, which makes me sad because while I still have one more year of school left, I doubt they (the administration) would change their rules.

P.S. Lex is super cute!

P.P.S. Andrew looks nearly identical to my American Civics teacher I had freshman year.

Plus it sparkles! How could you not like something that sparkles? Anyway, I think it's fantastic :)

You look gorgeous. And God, that's an awesome dress. I wish they made clothes that cool for dudes...All we get to do is wear a normal suit with a tie and shirt that go with whatever piece of awesome the girl is wearing. Maybe a vest. If Andrew's tie could talk, I would imagine it would say something like, "I'm a tie, please pay attention to me, I'm totally as cool as Hayley's dress!" And Hayley's dress would just shake its head and say, "No. No, you are not." Also, the corsage is lovely.

Lex is cute as well.

Glad you liked the stories.

I'm sure Lex would have had slightly better manners.

Did I mention that, at some point, I also lost my glasses? My mathematics teacher, Miss Kinslow (also drunk), stole them, and my friend James had to wrestle them back from her.
Oh, and when I was half-dead in the lobby, my (least favourite) History teacher, Mr Keal, was extremely helpful and responsible. He stood there taking photos of me with a bucket on my head.

By the way, your dress is fabulous.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I LOVE your dress, it's soooooo beautiful! (and my favorite color) I can't believe that people were joking about it, because it's not weird or anything, and it's not as boring as those black dresses that everyone seems to be wearing because it's supposedly will make you not look 'fat' ;)

By the way you should be really proud of yourself when it comes to having a play written about your diary entry!!! congrats on that :) Must be weird to have someone else play you...

Here's another comment about how beautiful you looked and how pretty your dress is! People who said it was "interesting" don't have any taste at all and I bet they wore a very ugly dress themselves. Sarah said...

You know, prom is made into a much bigger deal than it actually is. I went to Prom twice. The first was my junior year with all my senior friends, I went because I had been planning on attending all year with my Senior boyfriend at the time, until he dumped me in early March. I ended up going as a friend's date, so that I could still participate in all the fun and my ex didn't go. It was a bittersweet night for me, but I decided to just have fun with it. I "duck-danced" to rap songs and just had a blast. I decided it wasn't worth it to be upset about things I couldn't change.

My senior prom was no where near perfect. I wore a terrible dress I ended up buying because my father, with whom I was shopping, was being testy and just awful to me. I took my best friend at the time, a girl, so of course my whole class labeled me as a lesbian (we dressed alike for fun, which of course, means we're a couple). I spent time with and danced with the people I would miss, and got the DJ to play the time-warp, which only me and my group of friends danced to.

I'm sorry that your night seemed so negative. You look beautiful. Congrats on the play, that's so amazing. So, you're prom sucked. You're a character in a play, not many can say that, count yourself lucky.

By the way, I meant to comment on the makeup thing in your last post. I hate wearing a lot of makeup too, especially when it involves eyeliner. People tell me I look pretty or whatever, but I don't think I look like me. There's no point in looking pretty if I feel like someone else.

I think you still look like you, though. :-)

wow, this is the 100th comment. i'll be honest, sometimes i don't want to comment because i don't like to be judged by anyone, much less someone that i admire and respect as much as you. it's kinda hard to think that you're a senior, the same age as my sister, and a relatively normal teenager, although immensely more awesome. i feel like i have to have something important and meaningful to say if i'm going to comment.

Wow, your dress was gorgeous. All I see of prom dresses these days is pretty slutty. You look beautiful, seriously, and it's too bad your prom was so umm... juvenile? Is that the word? I can see how some people would not like your dress - or be awkward about it. That's not an insult because those people, an overwhelming majority of the time, lack the capacity to like anything that lindsy lohan isn't pictured to be wearing on page 4 of seventeen magazine. But man you look so fierce and stunning, really beautiful.

For my prom last year I wore a lace a-line '60s mini dress. It was the only thing I care to remember about the night. So, good move! The dress is the best investment.
