Even the Magic Eight Ball hates me.

Good evening, Blog, and welcome to the second installment of Blog Every Dairy-Free Day in April! Two days into my challenge, life without dairy looks remarkably similar to life with it. Breakfast was Kashi cereal with soy milk and a glass of V8 juice, lunch was black bean soup, salad*, two kiwis, a roll, and pineapple juice, "dinner" was salted (butterless) popcorn and a few Oreos, which are surprisingly milk-free!** Avoiding dairy products hasn't been remotely difficult yet. My school's dining halls are very vegetarian- and vegan-friendly, and most dishes are labeled if they contain major food allergens, including milk. I raised half an eyebrow at a friend's cookie dough ice cream, but my abstinence didn't induce any withdrawal symptoms. And as far as calcium is concerned, my bones are still intact.*** I don't want to jinx anything, but as of tonight, Mission: Possible.

In other news, I... um. That last paragraph pretty much exhausted the only topic I'd planned to discuss. I feel like, if this post were a real conversation, this would be the point where we'd all checked our phones and pretended to look around the room. I wish I had some sort of fantastic adventure to relay, filled with... I don't know... boys and, uh... booze and... other collegiate things... but if we're being honest, I'm a little bit pathetic. It's now 9:30PM and I've officially spent the entire day-- save the two hours I was across campus eating with a friend-- sitting placid on my bed. I find myself trapped between the desire to walk outside in the real human world and the calming complacency of doing absolutely nothing at all. Maybe I should go out. Should I go out? Hold on, I'll ask my Magic Eight Ball.

Unfortunately, I just remembered that I don't own a Magic Eight Ball. Hold on, I'll google one.

Found it. I asked, "Should I go out?" It told me to "ask again later." I waited a second and asked again. "Should I go out?"

"Outlook not good."

Geez, Magic Eight Ball. Way to believe in me. Anyway, guys, I think I'm gonna head out. Maybe I'll find something to do, maybe I won't. Either way, I'll update you on my fascinating decision tomorrow. Until then, I hope you all have a lovely evening, a lovelier morning, and a sense of accomplishment about not being as lame as I am. See you tomorrow!

*Spinach, romaine, green/yellow/red peppers, cucumbers, carrots, broccoli, onion, peas, lima beans, seeds, dried cranberries. No salad dressing because-- go ahead and call me crazy-- I don't really like any.

**This fact should gross me out. It does not.

***A note about calcium, since a lot of you were kind enough to be concerned for me: I've charted my vitamin and mineral intake in the past, and I actually receive plenty of calcium from non-dairy sources like nuts and greens. Something else that I find really interesting? It's heavily rumored that Americans receive too much calcium in their ordinary diets, considering that the countries with the strongest bones are those where people consume less milk. I'm obviously not a nutritionist or a scientist or a doctor, so don't take my word as law, here, but it's really a really interesting topic to research.

Ah, you're not alone in the staying in your room all day. I spent today almost entirely on tv tropes, until I took up continuing to reread the hunger games series. I could honestly care less about how productive this is.

I really don't like any salad dressing either. I'm not really a fan of most condiments. The only salad dressing I do like is the Italian dressing at Olive Garden.

I can't be the first person to ask this here. What happened to Presence?

Oreos don't have dairy?!? I'm kind of amazed by that. But I think just hearing that said is as far as my investigation into the topic is going to go. I just recently started eating Oreos again after eating waaayyyyy too many in one sitting over winter break and having some not-too-fun side effects. I hope you had a good time going out and the Magic 8 Ball was proved (proven?) wrong!

I'm not a huge fan of salad dressing either. I mean, once in a great while, I'll use a red wine vinagrette or a balsalmic or something, but the textures of legit dressings like ranch, etc, really gross me out.

I'm glad you're having a so-far easy time with being dairy free and hope you find some wild and crazy adventure to blog about later! I'm afraid I'm finding a little too much adventure so far, seeing as how I've had to blog twice today to discuss things. Ugh. I just hope it keeps it up so that I can get through the rest of the month.

I had a conversation with the Magic Eight Ball, and it basically told me that it's rigged. Either that, or the answers I got were fantastically coincidental...

If it helps, I am much more lame!

also, good luck with the dairy-free thing! I'd be interested in trying that sometime. But then again, I don't really eat a lot of non-dairy sources of calcium, but I suppose I could change that.

That salad that you ate sounds delicious except the lack of salad dressing. Crazy! My favourite is raspberry vinaigrette.

Did you stop running? I don't see your miles run per day anymore :( waaah

I'm glad you don't like dressings! Every time I dine with my father he goes "Look around, EVERYONE likes dressings. What's wrong with you?"
And your salad sounds fantastic!

So I definitely succumbed to the "calming complacency of doing absolutely nothing at all" today. Wait, no, that's a lie. I edited and uploaded my Playlist Live recap, which took a lot longer than I thought it would. All that waiting for importing, exporting, then uploading certainly felt like a whole lot of nothing, though.

I think something that many people don't understand about vegetarianism and veganism is that it isn't the standard meat eating diet minus the animals. (you know, like instead of meat and potatoes, you're just left with potatoes) Many vegetarians look elsewhere for vitamins and minerals and protein and whatnot.

Does anyone else think of Friends when they think of a magic eight ball? Also I'm having this problem with blogger but I don't know how to word it. Like when I press enter on my blog it doesn't show up when I post it. Everything's a big blob of words. So annoying.

Oreos have no milk in them? I think the Orthodox Union has been lying to me...

*checks*

Good Lord, they're only produced on equipment which handles dairy products! Have you any idea what this means for me? For world Jewry? This could change our lives!

And I think I could avoid dairy pretty easily, I almost never eat anything dairy except for most commercial chocolate candy, and I could give that stuff up in a heartbeat. I prefer dark anyway. Of course, I've taken to eating one meal a day in college, but that's a separate issue...

Hayley, I just have to say that you really inspire me.

I have been reading your blog from pretty much the beginning, and although I rarely comment (trying to change that!) I still get excited every time I see a new post come up! You have a really well-rounded head on your shoulders and you make me want to be more like you, as cheesy as that may sound.

As someone who has been in a similar boat as you in terms of health/weightloss (I'm probably about 15 pounds overwight at the moment, curse the freshman 15!) your posts about getting healthier and being more conscious about eating right and taking care of yourself have really made me more hyped about it myself. I think I may even mirror you and try eating less dairy for the next week or so! Seeing you be successful reminds me that it IS possible!

Anyway I guess what I'm trying to say is...from one girl to another, you are amazing and keep it up :) <33

I spent all day playing Lego with my little brother. That's about as productive as I get.

It's only now that I realise it says "Dairy" and not "Diary."

You kind of terrified me with the thing about OREOs. I've got a packet just here (unfortunately empty) and it says: (...) whey powder (from milk), blah blah blah. Contains: wheat, soya, milk.
Just sayin' :)

Yeahhhh, yesterday I watched four Karate Kid movies on Netflix- The three original ones with Mr. Miyagi & the new one with Jackie Chan. Very productive day!

Definitely shouldn't have read your post while I'm hungry because it had the ability to make me a thousand times hungrier. Oreos? Nom. Kashi? Nom Nom. Anyway, I know what you mean about sitting around your dorm room not really getting much done because I've been in the same boat this weekend. Hopefully, the laziness will pass to prepare for exams.

I hate salad dressing, too, and people also look at me like I'm crazy. When I refuse it at restaurants, the waiter/waitress aways comes back at least three times to make sure I'm sticking with my decision.

I just checked the box of Oreos on my desk and it says that its made with milk.
Is your blog just a giant lie?!
Or maybe you dont have the same Oreos. :P
As I live in France those are not US made Oreos (they are made in Spain for the European market) so yours may be different but those ones have milk in them.
And yes as I checked on the box to see if they were made with milk I had to eat one .
(This comment is a lie too, I ate two Oreos as I checked.)

I regularly use an online Magic 8 Ball to make serious life decisions...maybe I should buy a real one. And don't worry, you're not alone. I'm a college student and I've pretty much spent all weekend sitting on my bed watching Netflix. First weekend I'm not buried under school work and I decide to do absolutely nothing. Such is the college life.

Also, I'm going to follow your progress with the whole no-dairy thing. I'm currently vegetarian and I'm actually lactos intolerant...so I shouldn't be eating ice cream and drinking milk anyway.

Rachel said...

That sounds like a delicious day.

Hayley M said...

Wait, you're a vegetarian, correct? Does this mean you've gone completely vegan now, or are you just an ovo-seagan (vegan eating eggs & fish)? I'm curious.

Yay, Hayley Blogs. =]

I'm already having so much difficulty pulling through with my decision to give up all non-chicken meat. ...I cheated and had two bites of fancy sausage that my dad had made today. Le sigh. One day I will be a vegetarian.

I hope you had fun on whatever adventures you went on after this was poster :P

I don't like salad dressing either! Salad tastes better on its own, in my opinion. :3

Salads are definitely better without dressing.

Hey! I don't like dressing on salad either!! People usually think I'm nuts! Nice to see I'm not the only one. Don't worry about the laziness, when I spend weekends on campus I don't do much either. Yay exciting college life yay.
