Blog Every Dairy-Free Day in April!

BLOG EVERY DAY IN APRIL? Are you kidding me? I have far too much going on in my life. I need to order my box set of Jersey Shore DVDs, watch Charlie Sheen's live webcasts, apply for a job at Hooters, eat a gigantic, bloody steak. Besides, I've been really moody lately, considering my double pregnancy (my fetus is pregnant, as well-- kind of like conception Inception) and the fact that I'm addicted to heroin. Sorry to get your hopes up, but it's just not gonna happen this year.

You crazy fools. Of course I'm participating in BEDA. I'm as pumped as pumped can be! No, I'm pumpedier than pumped, because this year's BEDA is not just a race-- it's an obstacle course! While I've written a blog post every day in the month of April for the past two years, this year I'm adding another objective to the goal. I'm going to attempt eating a dairy-free diet from today until the 30th. And you're gonna watch.*

Why would you do that, freak?
I've been reading a lot about nutrition lately and there actually appears to be substantial evidence that dairy is not only unnecessary, but likely even harmful to humans. Out of curiosity, I gave up dairy products for a week and a half in March (in total secrecy, for the added thrill) and found that I really did feel more energetic. I want to see what happens after a whole month.

But Hayley, you love cheese!
Ugh. I know I do, Italicized Dialogue. But oddly enough, after holding out on pizza and cream cheese for only ten days, neither has seemed that satisfying since. If I get to the end of the month and find myself salivating uncontrollably over a pile of whipped cream, I'm not going to deny myself! I'm just curious if a detox will change my feelings.

Won't you kind of look self-righteous and preachy?
I hope not! I mean, I'm kind of famous for my ability to eat mass quantities of junk in record time, so I'm hardly a health nazi. Also, I'm willing to put the project on hold if it starts to inconvenience other people. (i.e. If someone invites me over for dinner, I'm not going to abstain from their cooking just to amuse myself. If something of that nature happens, I'll just add on an extra dairy-free day in May.)

What if you turn into a crazy starving rampage monster?
Then my blog posts will be hilarious.
I'll eat more bread, guys. And it's only one month!

I think you're an idiot.
Takes one to know one, Self.

Anyway, that's the plan. I'll keep you updated on a day-to-day basis with my triumphs and struggles, while still providing you (lucky bastards) with the all brilliant and witty anecdotes for which I'm critically acclaimed (remember the time I went to class, did homework, and then went to bed? Riveting!). Let me know in a comment or tweet if you're BEDAing as well. Oh, and are any of you vegan or dairy-free vegetarians? If so, I'd love to hear your advice and stories on the topic.

I hope you all have a lovely day. See you tomorrow, guys!

I mean, I'm allergic to dairy, so I couldn't tell you much since I've never really had it. Sorbet is your friend, though :)

I attempted to do dairy-free for a while, but it's hard! You don't realize how much dairy you eat and how even seemingly innocent dishes usually have dairy hidden within them somewhere. Just keep your eyes open and make sure you get your calcium from other foods and/or vitamins! Good luck!!!

I'm trying BEDA for my first time this year. :) Also, I wish you the best of luck on the dairy free diet. As an ice cream addict, I think it would hurt me so much to try. :P

YES, Hayley's doing BEDA. I've been refreshing Blogspot for about 30 minutes in class waiting for something to happen, and here you are! I'm BEDA-ing as well, over at the usual, (http://www.vloggerqueen17.blogspot.com)and I'm so happy you're doing it too.

As far as the no dairy thing...good luck. I hope you realize this means Chipotle is pretty much out of the question, unless you REALLY like quacamole, salsa, and beans. I'm sorry, I had to.

I'm allergic to dairy and it really isn't that hard. In England you can get dairy fee ice cream, soya milk, vegetable oil margarine and it all tastes fine and i'm sure you can get that stuff in America too.

I've given up dairy for Lent, and we're on, let's see. Like, the third week, maybe? And it's been a lot harder than I thought it would be. Pizza? Gone. Most pasta? Gone. Cereal? Unless you like it dry? Gone. It's been good for me, though. I wish you luck. :)

I'm being vegan again for April! Or trying, at least. I might give myself some free pass days (three, maybe?) so I can eat chocolate.

I really enjoyed my vegan February, your body feels AWESOME without dairy, really makes me think we oughtn't eat it. I might blog some of my experiences/good recipes if I find them (not that I cook much here) over at my zannawrites tumblr. WE SHALL SEE.

I just got really enthusiastic about this. But my biggest tip is that grains are your best friend. Lentils, quinoa yum yum yum.

Woo, I'm excited to read your posts! I'm doing BEDA for the first time over at my new blog.

Welcome to dairy-free living. I found out I was lactose intolerant a few months ago, so I decided that was a good time to go vegan. It's been nearly three months, and I wanna shout it from the rooftops. I feel amazing, I've lost weight without trying, food tastes better, I spend less money... I'm still learning, but feel free to hit me up with questions or tips or thoughts.

Happy BEDA!

Sorbet and sherbet are always good ideas if you need an ice cream fix. :)

But honestly, I could never go dairy free. I went ice cream free for about six months and that was torture enough.

I'm doing BEDA, too! On my livejournal. I've done August before, but never April. Exciting. :D

I've wanted to do BEDA or VEDA, but this is my final month of the semester, so finals are ever looming. However, I think I'm doing a cross over of them both. I'm very excited to watch everybody and read about April adventures.

Just out of curiosity, are you allowing yourself to things like soy milk and whatnot. I'd love to try this (I'm lactose intolerant, so not having to deal with pills and whatnot would be fantastic) but I'm not sure if I could give up my soy chais.

nelamonster said...

Yes! I'm doing BEDA too and heading right for a failure.
I wanted to go vegan but actually where I live you can't get many vegan products and that just wouldn't be smart. But I've been vegetarian for 9 years.
Right now I gave up candy (also because I might have diabetes. How cool is that?!) but I still have my guilty pleasure... "Dan milk chocolate" is what helps me through the day.
But are really dairy products unnecessary? What about calcium?

Unknown said...

That sounds like a really interesting idea. I'm curious to see how that goes for you! Good luck!

Jen said...

Going dairy free can be tough if you love all things cheesy, yogurty, ice creamy, etc. I will offer this little tidbit...read the labels of everything. I seriously found dairy products in FROZEN VEGETABLES. It's like HFCS, it just lurks around in unsuspecting places. Breads too. It's so dang sneaky!

CeliaAnn said...

I'm allergic to dairy, but like, only too much dairy. I can eat a chocolate bar or a cone of ice cream, but an entire extra-cheese pizza and a carton of ice cream might push my throat over the edge. I eat it in small amounts, but I don't even like cheese, so it's kind of rare. Even still, i'm always exhausted and lately i've just felt like crap all the time. I've always been the type to put off sleep, but I think my goal for this month will be to establish some sort of sleeping pattern.

I'm so happy to see you're BEDA-ing again this year! I'm looking forward to it. I want to attempt it myself, but i'm so bad at keeping up with things. I mean, what would I talk about?

I'm glad your doing BEDA again this year Hayley because I loved reading your posts last year (actually, I love reading your posts anytime). I wish you good luck on your dairy-free month!

I am attempting BEDA for the first time this year as a chronicle of my last 50 days or so of college.

This dairy free idea seems interesting I look forward to seeing if it works, though a new frozen yogurt place recently opened up where I live so I doubt I would have the will power to give up dairy anytime soon. Best of luck!

I'm going to be attempting BEDA, although I'll probably crash and burn. I'm a vegetarian, and I attempt dairy-free when it's convenient. Butter is always the hardest to give up for me, especially because it doesn't have a satisfying vegan replacement that I've found. Best of luck!

Also, good luck to your dairy free April. I don't think I could do it but it will be interesting to see if you have more energy by the end of April and if you want to keep it up. Keep us updated!

I've done BEDA for the past two years, though I've never technically won it. The first year I started late so I couldn't do all 30 days. Last year I did something like 25 days but I didn't get to do it all because I was in the midst of a road trip back to Wisconsin from Utah.

BUT THIS YEAR I WILL BLOG ALL 30 DAYS. And so it is written, and so it is done.

I'm a vegan. I suggest Uncle Eddie's Vegan Cookies, Purely Decadent Vegan Ice cream, Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza, field grain meat sausages, Earth Balance butter, Soyrizo (preferable the Trader Joe's brand), and So Delicious Yogurt. I've had both Daiya and Follow Your Heart cheese and neither were bad. Thanks to people with milk and egg allergies, there's more vegan food out there than you might think. There's also vegan cream cheese and whipped cream and Amy's makes vegan mac & cheese with Daiya, though I've never had it.

I was going to try to do BEDA this year... but we'll see how it goes! Cheese.. mmm. I am not supposed to have cheese on this diet I'm on, but sometimes I sneak it for 'calcium' purposes. I don't miss it as much as I thought I would, and I LOVE cheese! Good luck!

Two things: calcium can be found in other places. I think soy milk has just as much.
Thing two: I frakking love Chipotle. All you would have to do is omit the sour cream and cheese. Not so hard.

(Daily will probably end up turning out to be all of about once a week.)

Good luck going dairy-free for the month!

I'm not vegetarian or vegan because I just love meat and dairy food way too much to give that up, but I did give up chocolate and crisps for lent and that's really really hard. I had an idea, completely vanished.

I've been vegan for just over four years, so here are a few things to get you through:

Daiya cheese. This stuff is tapioca based, and while there's no alternative to cheese that tastes good uncooked, Daiya is AWESOME for grilled cheeses, pizza, baked pastas, etc. They've just started carrying it at Giant Eagle, though I don't know if you have those in Athens. Maybe Mom or Dad could send you some.

So Delicious coconut milk ice cream. While it's $4 bucks a pint, it's totally worth it. Coconut milk provides the closest thing to real ice cream there is. Soy and rice milk ice cream is okay, but not nearly as good as coconut milk. Also at Giant Eagle, some Acmes, and specialty stores like Krieger's and Mustard Seed.

Silk Pure Almond or Almond Breeze almond milk. Personally, because of the slightly higher fat content, I prefer almond milk for cereals and baking. You'll find either or both brands everywhere--even Marc's!

When I was first going vegan, if I was having a cheese craving and needed a reminder or why I was doing it, I would watch Mercy for Animals videos of how dairy cows are treated, and remind myself that the dairy industry creates the veal industry. I know you're doing it for more health reasons, but just a suggestion.

Oh, and by the way... You may or may not remember me; I was good friends with Kelly in middle school. I added you to my Google reader a while back when I found your Youtube channel through the vlogbrothers. Small world! :)

Oh, and PS: if you do remember me... sorry for ever picking on you with your sister!

Most breads have milk in it. I know this, because I found out about 3 years ago that I was lactose intolerant and that was why I was always sick. Find out the TINIEST bit of milk is to much for me. I am also very very VERY allergic to any form of Lactaid (considering I was put in the hospital for throwing up every five minutes twice because of that stuff). You are going to really look at the labels, as I have learned to do. I am not allergic to milk so indulging in a slice of pizza of a scoop of ice cream every so often makes me a little uncomfortable but I deal with it. A lot of snack foods have milk in... breads that are milk free are Italian bread, potato bread (there are others but those are the ones I tend to eat the most). Whey is considered milk so if you see that in a label stay away. I know how hard it is (considering I love so many things with milk in them) and I wish you luck and sanity (=])

I hope you take calcium, zinc and fat supplements, or else be extremely conscious that you're getting a healthy daily intake. So many people do it 4 te fashionz and forget that they're giving up essential minerals.

I was vegetarian for awhile, and dairy-free for most of it. Almond Breeze is a godsend for cereal, and nearly any cooking need. I've tried soy and rice, and neither compares. Coconut milk ice cream is delicious as well!

I've done the same thing with sugar several times over the past few months. After two weeks of no processed sugar (which includes seemingly innocent things like ketchup!) I have the skin of a goddess. Like you said with dairy, cravings for unhealthy foods are kaput on a sugar-free diet. If you become more interested in a vegan diet, I highly recommend getting a copy of the cookbook "I Am Grateful: Recipes and Lifestyle of Cafe Gratitude." I found out about it through Jason Mraz's blog :) It. Is. Amazing. And their dessert book is even better. I'm really interested to hear how your body responds to not eating dairy; I've never put that much thought into it. Are you taking any other new health/diet measures this month other than giving up dairy?

Frankie Lynn said...

i dn't think i could BEDA of i tried. looking foward to your posts this month :)

I just recently went vegan and my advice to you is to stay away from the processed fake crap, like pretend cheese and meat. It's expensive and tastes pretty horrible... you're probably better off learning how to cook and sticking with whole clean natural foods. Vegan blogs are awesome for recipes and tips etc.
Like you, I've found I have so much more energy and just feel better and healthier in general. It's amazing to think that something like dairy which we see as healthy actually has a detrimental effect on the body.
Good luck Hayley!

My cousin used to be a milk-aholic, but he was always sick. Then he spontaneously decided to give up milk for no reason, and he was bewildered that it didn't hurt when he touched is forehead. Also, he was less sick. So i think there is something to this milk thing which you speak of.
Heck yes i'm doing BEDA, bring it on April, bring it.

The problem with cutting things like that out of your diet is that you can make yourself allergic to them, if you ever do want to go back. I have several friends who have forced themselves into a situation where they *have* to be vegan because they are now allergic food.

I'm really glad that you are doing BEDA this month.

However, I personally think that going totally without dairy is a little silly. I mean there are obvious things about dairy that are good for you, like calcium. Of course, too much dairy (like to much anything) is not good for you. So why not make it a real challenge and just cut down your dairy intake? I think the world would be a healthier place if people ate things in moderation. But for some reason we really enjoy completely banning certain food groups from our diet. Personally, I think it's a bit extreme.
Especially when someone have to start taking diet supplements because they aren't eating a certain food group. I think that's just backwards.

However, having said all that, obviously making the decision to cut out dairy from diet for a month is your prerogative and I really hope it works out well for you!

BEDA for the second year this year! And it's you who originally inspired me to try it last year, so thanks!
I actually had a huge conversation about this recently with someone. Pretty much, milk is entirely unnecessary in your diet after childhood. Lactose tolerance in adults is really something that is a relatively recent development in humans.
But giving up cheese?! Especially since it also provides protein... oh man, I couldn't do that. Every other dairy type, sure, but not cheese.

I'm a vegetarian, and I would love to go vegan, but it's so hard. I eat a lot of cheese. As much as I know it's unhealthy and shouldn't be, it's so hard. Plus the cafeterias at my university aren't exactly vegan friendly, which would make it harder.

I'm considering trying to do June vegan, since I'll be back home, and not under the roof of the Cafeteria.

I'm BEDAing. Sort of. I'm calling it Blog Almost Every Day in April since I've already failed at the every-day thing.

My diet has had its ups and downs this year. I was a pescetarian, and then I lapsed. At the moment I've cut out everything but fish and turkey, and I'm working on getting rid of cheese too. I'm pretty sure I could go straight-up vegan if it weren't for sushi.

I realize that I didn't answer your question at all, but I too am in the process of trying to give up foods I like. Good luck!

Hayley I'm so excited that you've decided to go dairy-free!

I switched from vegetarian to vegan last year around this time, and aside from some logistical issues (I had to pack a lot of lunches in situations where I would have just picked something up) it felt really great. I did lose weight, and I was forced to learn to cook. I've discovered that cooking is really fun!

Granted, my mom was vegan so a lot of the food I was eating was already vegan, but it was challenging. One of the great things about it was that my allergies - both to animals and pollen - decreased dramatically.

I support you!
