Friends in Low Places

There are some obvious downsides to being an irrevocable country music fan. It's the most look-down-upon genre of music around, and admitting your love can be embarrassing. People tend to think a lot less Carrie Underwood, which it is, and a lot more Tanya Tucker, which it nowadays definitely isn't. Guys, I've been trying to hide my feelings from you for far too long. The truth of the matter is that I live in the farmlands, I drive an American pickup truck, my parents are Republicans, and my soul sounds a little bit like Garth Brooks. So, if you can stomach it, here's a song I can't get out of my head.

I've made my first stop on the road to MonoLand by waking up with a sore throat. It was difficult to swallow the grape juice-dipped body of Christ this morning in church, and all I've eaten today is some tomato soup and a bag of chocolate-covered almonds-- the soup for my sickness, the almonds for my uterus. Not a good morning as far as health and vivaciousness are concerned, but hopefully leaving now to see Up with TOLauren will help. Hooopefully.

Awww, I hope you feel better soon!

I had the most nasty awful cold/sickness thing a few weeks ago. It might have even been the SWINE FLU. But I'm fine now. :)

Have fun seeing UP.

UP was awesome, I have never been to a more intense Pixar/Disney movie, i was freaking out/crying/having nervous spasms the ENTIRE TIME. But it is really cute and sad and super fantastic

Random; but did you root for any of the Tonys?

Geez, wow I'm selfish. Feel better with your Mono bout.

I still have the copy of Garth Brooks' greatest hits on cassette that I had stolen from my mother years ago. No shame.

Also, I hope you feel better. Mostly from your anxiety over loving country music. But also from your impending mono, if you must.

Hope you feel better Hayley!

I haven't seen a movie since Twilight, which is just pathetic. But I really want to see Up, I've heard fantastic things about it.

Best Wishes xD =)

I'm sorry.
I usually give most of your links a chance and find something I like, or I'm at least pleasantly surprised.
But when the letters "CMT" came up... I couldn't ditch that page fast enough.

haha! Chocolate for my uterus.

As far as country music goes, I love love love Josh Turner.

Wow I totally thought I went somewhere else when I read Carrie's name. Ironically I'm getting ready to leave for Nashville tomorrow to go to her fan club party and see her along with some other country stars play in the celebrity city of hope softball game. Can't stay for any of CMA Fest though because my graduation is on Friday =[

I hope you feel better! Up was awesome <3

'cause i've got friends in low places. where the whiskey drowns and the beer chases my blues awaaaay!

amazingly enough, when one has a parent who constantly plays the country station on the kitchen radio, you pick up a fews things from time to time... :)

I can't say that I'm a big fan of country music, but I hope you feel better and don't have mono.

I hate when people think of the really old country stuff when they think of country music. I think of Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban and whatnot. Anyways, I hope you enjoy UP. It looks pretty good. Also, I hope you feel better and don't have mono, it's killer.

Eh. You're not as bad as my history teacher. He is 45 and flaunts the fact that he listens to Rihanna, JayZ, Justin Timberlake, and Kanye West. I am forever haunted by images of him rolling into the school in his Chrysler LeBaron blaring out "BCUZ! WHEN THE SUN SHINES WE'LL SHINE 2GETHUR!"
brb I have to go gag. Enjoy your mono.

I hope you feel better! I had a mono scare earlier this year (it's times like those when you seriously rethink your judgment in drinking out of everybody's beverages) and it's not fun. I hope it's just a coincidental sore throat!

And as for country, I had a phase a few years ago where all I listened to was country because I decided I was going to like it. I lasted three days. So at least I'm an informed hater!
(And I tend to think Eric Church, Rascal Flatts, and Brad Paisley because one of my best friends loves country. We love her, but we will never stop teasing her.)

There's nothing wrong with being raised by Republicans- My parents are Republicans and I was actually a Rush Baby and Hanitized by the time I was 8. At age five I was excited to be on talk radio. I'm dead serious.

Anyway, I hope you feel better! Up sounds amazing and I hope you are feeling well enough to see it! Have fun with your friends!

I hope your sore throat will go away and that it isn't mono.

Have fun with Up!

GET BETTER! HOW COULD I FORGET THAT!

I am so terrified that I might kind of like country music if I listened to it too much, that I literally avoid it at all cost, which is extremely difficult when you live in eastern North Carolina (or any part of North Carolina).

Oh...and feel better.

Can't join in with you on the modern country music I'm afraid. Or the real old timey stuff either.but I do love Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and a few others that brought some California sensibility to the music. And I do like a little bluegrass. Now say to yourself "I don't have mono, I don't have mono!" Positive thinking Hoover.

I just saw UP today. I loved it! I thought is was sad at parts, but I was constantly laughing because all the kids in the theater were making loud and obvious commentary. I thought the short was awesome, too, but I'm a sucker for Pixar shorts.

Mel said...

I hope you start feeling better!
Illnesses suck :(

Your confession is identical to my life... minus the Garth Brooks part. All or most of my friends were raised in the city and have purged all the country music from my life.

I saw UP today, too!
It was very good, and made me cry on several occasions. I hope you enjoy it :D

Bluuuuuuugh Garth Brooks.

To each his/her own... *hides collection of Jonas Brothers*

Feel better, girl! Don't feel compelled to appease us with your blogging if you don't feel up to it. We just want a Healthy Hayley. <3

I broke when he started singing. I'm sorry, Hayley, but we're going to have to go our separate ways if you think I'll ever be able to stomach that.

I still love you, though. :]

I know what you mean about country music. I live in a small Illinois town and my high school mascot was the Farmers. I try not to say this to too many people I know, but on the interwebs I'm Fearless (like Taylor Swift). Ok I'll stop now.

I am a huge Contry music fan and much like you i pretend to not acknowledge it to others, when ever i am nominated as driver at lunch I turn the car on and get looks across the board... Hate that... Hope you get better soon, Mono is so not fun...
I hope you enjoyed Up... Did you cry???

I am right where you are concerning the trip to MonoLand! I had it a few weeks ago and I'm pretty sure it's coming back, as I've developed a sore throat throughout the day. I hope you feel better soon!

I just spent my entire weekend up to my knees in mud at my town's rodeo, listening to country music, drinking beer and watching cowboys be all cowboy like. I've put on a face for a very long time, but I think I'm finally ready to come out and say it... I love country music! Actually - here's a country song which is about where I live. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhkcjxLCm8Y

No reason to be ashamed. I love country music too.

It is a fairly recent development and all my boyfriend's fault, but I adore all kinds of music including folk and classic rock, so
it was bound to happen eventually.

One of my favorites is 'Something That We Do' by Clint Black.
Beautiful song.

Hope you feel better soon.

I made myself stop watching it midway. I knew it wouldn't take too long to memorize the chorus and I didn't want to be up all night with that in my head. I'm from OK and country music has pretty much been jammed down my throat my whole life.

Feel better, Hayley. I actually have a few friends here with mono. Weird. Can you say monocaust?

Kristen said...

Yay! Somebody else likes country music! I hate it when people say "yeah, I like all music, except country." Right now the one country song I can't get out of my head right now is 'Fight like a Girl' by Bomshel. If you haven't heard, check it on the youtubes. It's fantastic! Hope you feel better soon! Alright, enough exclamation points.

Caliowin said...

I love country music but even more I love folk music. You should check out Show of Hands and Seth Lakeman. My friends think I'm weird too for liking unusual music. For me, nothing beats the feeling of going to the local pub and having a group of locals playing folk songs together and everyone singing.

Hope you feel better soon hayley :) xxx

If UP won't help, nothing will. It's probably the best movie I've seen in a long long time. If by "best" you mean makes you cry, makes you laugh, makes you love, makes you forget everything, makes you feel for the characters... because that's what I mean by "best".

There are people who think best means whispering "Rosebud" at the end of a movie.

Ok I just listened to some old Mugglecast episodes and I stumbled across the one that Ben said your name in. Why did he call you HARLEY? Haha. What's so difficult about Hayley?

...i despise country music. :| different strokes.

feel better! i had a mono scare a couple days ago (my roommate had it, but it wasn't the contagious kind...?) anyway, that sucks. enjoy UP; i want to see it soooooo bad but it hasn't come in england yet, ugh.

-by the way my name is carla, which explains the beginning of my karla/carla comment on your last post. okay. bye.

Coming from someone who loves Willei Nelson and Shawn Colvin, I like to think I can empathise somewhat.

The thing that makes it worse is I'm not American, I live in the 'burbs, I don't have, and nor could I drive if I did, a car, and my parents are irrevocable liberals.

And if you ever get the cahance, you should listen to 'Arkansas Traveller' by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman off of their album 'Not For Kids Only'. I would upload it and send you the link but a) I might be a creep who's trying to give you a virus (am I? aren't I? I guess you'd just have to trust me) and b) well... that's just illegal!

I like the 3d glasses though. Aren't they neat?
the 3d part didnt work for me, so i popped the lenses out and now i use it has a fashion statement! ^^
I'm sorry that you feel sick :( that must suck.

*hugs* and your almond uterus comment made me giggle. i believe it makes up for you being a country fan (: and i was sad to read about boyfriendthing because i was very close to something similar and now feel stupid for even considering it. *sigh* feel better and hope we see you soon!

Oh Hayley, you can definitely admit to your guilty pleasures here. I'll tell you one of mine! I absolutely adore chick flicks, which SOUNDS normal, but if you met me in person you'd be totally and completely shocked. Up was awesome, and I hope you feel better!

Elrich89 said...

Worry not. I, for one, have an unspoken undying adoration for bluegrass music, despite being...incredibly English.

Being the intelligent young lady you are, I'd like to think you've worked your way around the less savoury aspects of Republicanism, namely firearm-addiction, American exceptionalism, rejection of homosexuality, anti-immigration, and this anti-choice abortion attitude which baffles everyone here.

I didn't mind country until the local radio stations decided they should all jump ship from their respective genres and all go country. Now there's a good 8 country stations I can get, which is unnecessary. But yeah.

Elrich89,

One thing I get tired of is everyone assuming that all teenagers are liberal. I'm seventeen and a proud conservative. While it's true that most teenagers I know are liberal, many are conservative. Please don't assume that everyone here holds the same beliefs.

That being said, I find the way you worded conservative views offensive. Firearm addiction? Anti-immigration? Come on. Don't act like all right-wing people are radicals who are out to get you.

Depending on her views (and it's true that I don't know them) you may have even offended the author of this blog, or at the very least, her family.

Now I don't want to get into a comment war on someone else's blog; but after reading your comment I felt the need to express my views.

this is a bit late to be commenting, but i've only discovered this blog today.
and i obviously don't know you.
but yeah, country is by far the most hated genre. my friends think less of me for it. and my brother thinks i'm nuts.
living in canada, it's even less liked. we don't got many rednecks around here, and most of them are french...
anyhoozle, point is. feel your pain.
doubtful that you'd read this, but please try not to pay attention to my lack of capitalizing my sentences, i don't have a tendency to use capitals unless i'm writing a nice long essay/test/whatever for school or i'm posting on a forum of some sort.

So...I've recently just discovered that you and Kristina had a blog.
Therefore, I've been reading all of your entries from start to finish.
And I have to say that it's been keeping me really entertained, especially since it's summer and I have nothing else to do.
From reading all of these entries I've found that we are actually pretty similar. We just graduated, our parents are Republicans, we are closeted country music fans, and we love HP.
So reading your blog is kind of like reading the inside of my own brain. Which is weird, but awesome at the same time =]
