More Half-Blood Prince and a MacBook

Upon seeing Half-Blood Prince a second time, I'm left, once again, with only unstructured, bulleted fragments of thought. I was reminded of what I forgot to tell you before, and I came to a few new conclusions.

--Last time, I got a little misty-eyed when Harry and Luna went together to Slughorn's party. Not because of anything the movie itself accomplished, but because it took me back to that place in my head. I know much of the fandom relates to Luna, the dreamy outcast, but I love her because of the good she brings out of the other characters. It warms my heart to see Ginny treat Luna well, and to hear Harry reassure her that they're friends.

--This time, my misty eyes were care of Tom Felton. I've heard the argument in a few different places on the internet that the movie neglected the Draco plotline, but I sincerely couldn't disagree more. I jokingly tweeted tonight that they should've called the film Draco Malfoy and the Vanishing Cabinet, but sarcasm aside, I'm still in awe of Tom's performance. The way he tries to act like he hates Hogwarts, distancing himself, trying to convince himself that he has any say in his destiny. The look of torture on his face when Dumbledore speaks in the Great Hall. His indignant grimace as he exposes his Dark Mark. Aaaaah! Draco is one of my favorite characters, and I think Yates did him justice this time.

--Sorry, but I very much stand by what I said about Helena Bonham Carter's Bellatrix. If possible, tonight she annoyed me ten times more since I was expecting it. I HATE anything done unnecessarily quietly or gently, so her little saunter-around-you-and-whisper-in-your-ear thing just about pushed me over the edge. It's as if she barely skimmed the wikipedia article on Bellatrix and saw only the words "sexy," "scary," and "dramatic." Within a world of extremely complex characters possessing both good and evil, Bella is evidence for the theory that humans can be bad by nature. Helena didn't make me contemplate mob mentality and the incest problems of the pureblood families. She just sort of made me squint my eyes irritably.

--I understand that the last scene was trying to show the dynamics of the trio's friendships-- Hermione awkwardly attempts to lighten the mood by mentioning Ginny, but is still worried sick and is trying to look at the situation practically, while Ron is present and supportive but doesn't know what to say. I love Fawkes flying off, and the sad goodbye dripping out of Harry's final words. I do NOT like, however, how distant Ron felt. I was just uneasy and anxious until the last few seconds when he walked up to the other two.

--All it takes is fifteen minutes of explaining the major themes of the series to my dad in the car ride home for me to remember how complicated HP is, and subsequently how much of my freaking soul is this story. The other five movies embarrassed me. I didn't want anybody to think I dedicated myself to a corny kid book about "the power of friendship." But finally, finally, finally, I'm proud to be associated with a Potter movie.

Anyway, I'm currently sloshing hot tea around my sore throat, daydreaming about Harry, and dreading tomorrow. Our garden will be covered with politicians all afternoon. They'll drink wine, they'll speak passionately about trivial crap that doesn't matter, they'll pretend to know who I am and make me uncomfortable by expecting me to return the favor to them. It'll be less than fun... all I can hope is that my sister will be embarrassed by my hair and ask me to hide in my room. Looking like a delinquent reaps serious benefits!

In super important news, I placed my order today for a beautiful, glorious, gorgeous, spectacular MacBook Pro. It'll be hard to get used to the keyboard, lack of mouse, quiet speakers and new video editing software, but I REALLY THINK I'LL BE OKAY CARRYING MY COMPUTER AROUND 24/7. Think of all the writing I've always thought about but never done! It'll be so easy! (That's completely untrue, but it makes me feel better about how much money was spent on this baby.) It should ship in "7 to 10 business days," but in my experience, it's taken much less time to get here from Columbus. I'll let you know as soon as he gets here. And yes. I just personified my new laptop.

Sexy: Well, obviously. :)
Unsexy: How little Neville and Tonks appear in the HBP movie. I've never really thought of myself as a fan of either of them, but I certainly sense their absence. Besides, Matt Lewis is far from unsexy!

Once again, I pretty much agree with you on all your points. I missed Neville so much in this film, but I can't wait for the next two because of his importance in them. I'm jealous of your MacBook! I've always wanted one.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps Neville wasn't in this movie as much because he's come to look so un-Neville. In my opinion.

You know what this post reminded me of?
A year ago, I was going through my old stuff, and I found a "Harry Potter Journal" from when I was five years old, in which I had written "Marry me, Harry Potter."

...I was the quite the character in kindergarten.

joy isobel said...

I'm so glad we agree :) So many people are saying how much they disliked this movie, and how it's one of the worst Potter movies, but I disagree! I was a bit anticlimactic, but I thought they managed to squeeze in so many plot lines (seriously, there are at least 20) into one 2 1/2 hour film. The acting was especially well done, especially Tom Felton, even though it's been said about a billion times before haha. The one thing that disappointed me was the lack of Neville (one of my FAVORITE minor characters!) and how they completely disregarded the Ministry plot line. Ah well, moving on. Why are there going to be politicians at your house tomorrow?

I was supposed to go and see HBP tonight but my brother and his backed out, I hate that, I am hoping to see it soon,

Michael said...

i hated that ending solely because ron was separate from the other two. the fawkes bit was nice and kinda made up for not having a funeral scene but trio should have been togther

Brad said...

Argh! I still can't see HBP til Monday and you're reviewing it again! A curse on you Hayley! :P I'll just have to let my memories of the book sustain me for the next 48 hours.

A political party on your lawn? Dude, who are you? Are you related to President Hoover? Sounds like a pain. I'd dye my hair pink to get out of that too!

toastburntbread said...

I really liked when Harry said " you are my friend!" to Luna. It made me all happy inside. Also when he tells Hermonie that he'll bring someone really cool to the dinner and the next shot is of him and Luna. Luna is superb and one of my favorite characters.

ThePeterIs said...

I love what you said about being embarrassed by the other movies. I've never been able to say it so well, but I couldn't agree more. When mentioning HP to non fans I've always had to quickly jump in and defend myself from someone getting the idea that it was the movies I liked. Thanks for telling me why. I don't know if this one changes that, but it's definitely a big step.

I missed the scenes in Dumbledore's office wherein Harry and Dumbledore talk through the mores of choice and whether, had Voldemort chosen Neville instead, he would have been like Harry. And I love the scene where Harry comes to realize that it doesn't matter what the prophecy says because he would keep fighting Voldemort even if it hadn't been that way. There's that line that goes something like... "Some people might not be able to tell the difference, but Harry did, and he knew his parents had too."

But... for the first time since I watched the first movie at the age of ten, I felt like this was a movie I could watch over and over. I can't sit through any of the earlier ones anymore. But this....

I'm going again on Monday. :)

labyrinthalaska said...

I haven't yet seen HBP, but from what I've heard from friends... it really depends who you are, as to how good it is. I've heard from the "incredible" spectrum down to "worst of the 6 thus far". I guess when I find the time to see it, I'll make my own judgement.

I can't wait til I can order my laptop for college. It'll make life so much easier. I know I'm getting a Mac, just not sure what kind yet. And we can only hope you do carry your MacBook around 24/7, and blog constantly(though it is doubtful, but maybe we'll never have to miss a day of your blogging).

Meli said...

I'm with you about personifying your Macbook Pro. I did the same thing when I got mine and went as far as to name it. It's just easier than referring to it as "my laptop" all the time, plus it's just that important that it *needs* to be named. :)

I suggest you name yours, if only for the fun of it.

Leah said...

Hoover, you TOTALLY NEGLECTED TO MENTION the look on Malfoy's face when he sees Katie Bell is back in school. That was WAY up there on my list of Good Tom Moments.

Does the laptop have a name yet? Or are you waiting until you meet him?

... oh my god I can't wait to see this movie with you.

Indigo said...

Haha, I saw it again to today, with my dad, and had to explain A LOT. Again, I agree with everything you said, except I still think Helena Bonham Carter is perfect for Bellatrix...

Sarah said...

I saw it again today. I agree, Tom Felton is amazing, especially in this one. He really stands out.

Someone told me that maybe the Ron/Hermione/Harry thing going on at the end with Ron being so distant is (could it be!?!?) foreshadowing for the next movie, when Ron walks out because of the same scenarios that occur over and over again. I want to believe so badly that it's foreshadowing and that they're that cool.

Anonymous said...

We need to talk HBP, because I totally agree with all of your complaints and feel uncomfortable and outcasty at your praises. It...wasn't that good. I don't know. Call me. Or I'll call you. Or something.

Marlena said...

That was me, by the way. I forgot to sign in.

way2geeky said...

I agree totally with your statement.
I'm finally glad to welcome this into the harry potter family as something i am proud of,Telling everyone about HP6,I fell like i am a mother, showing off her newborn.

Anonymous said...

I have to disagree. I think this is the worst of the series. I feel embarrassed over this one actually. It felt like, well, just another teen movie. Nothing more. I'm bummed to see that so many people loved it while I found it so... empty. : (

The book is brilliant.

Anonymous said...

Tom Felton? I don't see why everyone was so impressed with his performance. Not trying to be mean, I'm just bummed because everyone is a part of something I just don't understand. It's like Twilight all over again. : ( At least I relate to everyone with the books.

Kaitlin said...

Oh my goodness, I have seen Matt Lewis in several pictures lately, and he has gotten so gorgeous. I'm so glad he has grown up like this. Just the dumpy middle schooler to the smoking man that he is.

Elizabeth... said...

My Mum insisted on elbowing me every time Matt Lewis was on screen; he's always been a family favourite since my sister got his autograph when he was filming the FIRST film at Durham Cathedral.
I found an old magazine the other day which has a photoshopped image of Dan on the front with bright green eyes. Why do they not do this in the films, such a cornerstone of the upcoming Snapeness.
Oh and Draco. He isn't just Harry adversary, he's so much more. I adored Tom Felton's portrayal of him.
Also, as soon as your MacBook arrives I expect you'll name it, please share that name with us. :)

I had and still have that feeling about forking out all that cash on a macbook...I mean its a hella lot. AND worry not my macbook is a girl and I call her Tessa (my old PC is KT too =P)

Nally said...

I totally agree with you about Harry Potter being complicated, because when I finished Deathly Hallows, I told my mum that Snape was actually a goodie. So of course, she asked me how it happened and I said "Well, it turns out that Snape was actually in love with Harry's mum from when they were kids, and there was this big rivalry between him and Harry's dad and Sirius and..." and I could just see her losing concentration in front of me.
In the end I just said that she'd have to read it if she wants to know.

KaraDawlish said...

Yea i had a similar random relevation revelation did i just witch around letters? Wow now i'm throw off and i honestly don't know which one it is... But whatever realisation? While explaining to my family about the movie. My older cousin took me along with his son and some of my other younger cousins in hopes i could help explain in because he had never seen any of the earlier movies or read the books. OooooooooooooOoooooOooOoOoh Boy. That was a process. And i realised HOW ridiculous i must have sounded the plot was so complex and he was missing out on ao much backstory ~I~ sounded stupid lol. He leaned over to me during the movie and asked about "That Snake guy" wether he was good or bad. I pondered what to reply and decided on simply "good" couple minutes later he killed dumbledore that lead to much confusion from my cousin a very long conversation attempting to explain snape and a lot of crying from my one little cousin :( he saw the other movies and was very sad dumbledore died aww it was so sadddd :(

Whatsername said...

i have watched the movie twice now and i am still amazed by it. i am surprised to hear and read again and again that pretty much everybody seems to dislike it, so it's good to see that there is someone else being satisfied with it.
i guess i like it so much because my favourite characters are ron and draco and they both have good scenes and their acting is just right on spot in this movie. i know that they haven't sticked to the book 100 % but the changes that were made didn't bother me, especially since i think they have all the important scenes in it.
for me the book was about showing voldemort as a child (and he really scared me in the movie!), harry finding out about the horcruxes, showing that there is more to malfoy than just being the cocky evil boy, dumbleodre dying and the pupil having a lot of interest in the opposit sex. and all that was in the movie, so yeah, i liked it :-)

Erin said...

The thing about the vanishing cabinet is that they spent all that time in the movie showing Draco trying to get it to work, but in the end he didn't need it. They never had that battle scene with the old DA members and professors fighting the Death Eaters, so having the Death Eaters come through the cabinet made no sense. They came through just to watch Draco fail to kill Dumbledore and see Snape actually do it. And then walk out completely unchallenged.

Congrats on getting a MacBook. I take it you'll be switching over from a windows computer? I'd like to hear how that goes as I'm considering doing the same in the somewhat distant future.

VicMorrowsGhost said...

New computers are so sexy. Spotlessly clean, everything running so quick and trouble free. Nice.

Rennie said...

I pretty much agree with what you're saying. Bellatrix annoyed the crap out of me, and everyone else that I saw the movie with loved her. I thought that the weird sexiness was completely unnecessary, and the kicking of tableware was over-the-top.
How do you feel about Harry on felix? I thought it was hilarious. lol. I read in some interview that Emma Watson said that Harry on felix was closer to Dan's personality than normal Harry. haha.

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with you Re: Ron at the end. I was so distracted by the fact that he was sitting on the step not speaking that I paid no real attention to what Harry and Hermione were talking about.

God, I love HP!

Kristina said...

I'm excited for you and your computer. Buying a macbook was the greatest decision I ever made, and you honestly get used to all the things you listed so quickly. I used to use a portable wireless mouse with my laptop and I finally just tossed it because the track pad becomes second nature. <3

Katy said...

Ron's distance in the last scene rather irked me as well, but I think it shows a lot of Ron's insecurities. He sees Harry and Hermione sharing this intimate moment, sees them looking onward, and doesn't know what to do. I think it beautifully foreshadows his eventual departure, the way he feels about Harry and Hermione's relationship, and how on-the-fence he is to just leave everything behind. He's not as selfless as Harry; he can't be, because he has so much more to lose. Ron has the family Harry never did, and as much as Molly tries to replace Harry's mum, it'll never happen.

*loves Ron*

And as a girl who's read her weight in Ron/Hermione fanfiction, I cannot wait for movie 7.

AND NEVILLE! <3 I love him so so so much. Honestly. I named my iPod Neville.

Also, I've come to love Draco more and more throughout my re-readings. Tom Felton's downright sexiness doesn't hinder his climb to the Favorite Character List.

And I absolutely adore my Macbook -- I've named him Darth, as he is black. And sexy. ;) You'll have to let us know what you name your new baby. <3

buying this macbook pro was the best thing i ever did.

you're going to love it. the keys make a perfect little "ting" sound when you hit them.

and yeh - i guess the other stuff it does is pretty righteous too

The Vagabond said...

I know exactly what you mean about trying to explain HP to non readers. It's close to impossible. I also get so frustrated at the people who say they only watch the movies. I just want to yell at them because they're missing so much joy in their life. "Don't you want to be HAPPY!?! You could become a better person because of this!!!" That's probably not the best approach though.

I didn't like the ending because I felt it was too lighthearted. I wanted it to end on a sad and serious note, but Warner Brothers tried, once again, to make it light hearted, happy despite the circumstances, and... PG.

Haley said...

Ahhhhh I hate Helena Bonham Carter too. She is so typecast and she performs every character in the same manner. I also pictured Bellatrix as a beautiful, black-haired woman, but Carter made her look like a 90-year-old mental patient. Narcissa sucked ass too.

Tom Felton = hot.

I absolutely loved the movie, it is the best so far, and I have always loved Draco.

I laughed most of the time, but the beginning (right after sirius died), when hermione cried after Ron and L kissed, and when dumbledore died... all those moments gave me tears. My friend got embarassed.

Neville was lacking in this film, think i saw him once or twice in the hall scenes, did he even have a line? I missed Cho Chang more, didnt even see her at all.
I met Matt Lewis once, at a sci fi convention(man that sounds geeky) in manchester,uk, it might have only been for about 3 minutes, but so worth £10 :D, for a photo.
I thought i would leave a comment as i havent before, i always read though, so hello! :D

Yesterday I had my first chipotle burrito, and I thought I should tell you.

Personally, I liked Order of the Phoenix better than HBP. Harry and Ginny were so awkward! But the first 2 are still my faves.

Alex Cee said...

I disagree with the whole Ron being distanced. This movie did a really good job of foreshadowing the forthcoming events. In the past movies we have seen how together the trio is, but this is an insight into Ron's mind that we only truly see in that scene in Deathly Hallows. However, it makes me sad that Ron even feels like that.

I do not like how the movies treat Neville. He is by far my favorite character. And I wish they had played up the Luna/Neville stuff we kind of get in the books.

And I agree with you wholeheartedly about Draco. That was an amazing portrayal.

Sarah A.F.Mow said...

It drove me insane that the ending scene was not a funeral for Dumbledore. That would've been a perfect scene to finish with. I mean really. It was so weird how distant Ron was. It was so unlike Ron. It was awkward. It is the thing that annoys me most about the movie and I loved this movie. If Cedric got a funeral scene so should dumbledore.

I totally agree with you on the ending, especially the bit with Ron. I didn't like that he was out of most of the ending shots.

I also really agree with the other things you said about the movie. Tom Felton was absolutely amazing! Definitely my favorite movie. I hope the 7th movies are even better!

So jealous you're getting a Macbook! I would love a new Mac!

Callidora said...

I felt like they were setting up for the next movie in the last scene. Having Ron apart from Harry & Hermione is showing Ron how close they are & thus sets him up to be jealous of them so that he can destroy the locket horcrux.

GOD, Matthew Lewis is a DREAM BOAT.

Also, I have been tossing around the idea of getting one of them there MacBook Pros, but I need to know what I need to purchase in ADDITION to the laptop itself. So, when you purchase software, you should blog about it because I'm interested. :)

Yeah, I wish they would let the people who have only watched the movies get to know Tonks better so that they'll all be sad in the 7th movie(s) instead of like, "oh yeah, that chick."
