Amish parties

As much as I adore all my new friends, no one has made my transition into college easier than my sister, Kelly, and her roommates, Alex and Morgan. Alex is prettier than everyone else in the world. Actually, according to Kelly, Alex is a stupid ho-ho. Morgan isn't here right now, but if she were, I'm sure she'd be feeding me ridiculous lines and begging me to include her in my blog as well. I'm cuddled on the couch in their cute little apartment, which they've fondly named The Liquor Cabinet, and Alex just fed me chips and queso dip, airplane style. "A perfect landing!" she cheered with my chomp.

Anyway, today was the first day of classes. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the chill days in my schedule, like an island of relaxation surrounded by a sea of chaos, so I was spoiled this morning. My one class, about Gender and Sexuality in Judeo-Christianity, started later in the afternoon, and seems like it'll be a lot of fun. Besides the fact that it's held in this sketchy, beat-up room inside an actual parking garage, with ninety students and uncomfortable chairs with no desks, and besides the fact that I anticipate an enormous amount of homework, today's class was enough to get me excited. Michal's in it, for one. And we watched an incredible documentary about Rumspringa, the Amish tradition in which teenagers are allowed to experience average life, in order to make the choice for themselves whether or not they want to join the Amish church. I thought it was unbiased and well-executed; it didn't make the Amish look like an inescapable, brainwashing cult, but it also showed the negative implications of religious suppression. It's called The Devil's Playground, and I suggest you check it out if you have the chance.

Other than that, today was rather uneventful. In true hayleyghoover fashion, I downed most of a bag of pizza rolls after class, but I don't see that adding to The Freshman Fifteen, since I did that at home twice often. I talked to Sebastian on Skype for a bit while my roommate was out. Ran into PJ on the street. Some of the first-week glamour is wearing off, so that not every corner contains some fantastic new adventure, but I'm still really, really happy. I feel at home, and I'm content here, in a longrun sort of way.

Sexy: Glee! It was advertised before as starting on the sixteenth, but apparently it airs on Fox tomorrow night. I've watched the pilot of this show on Hulu about four times, and I positively can't wait for more Lea Michele and more awesome.
Unsexy: The thirst that accompanies most of a bag of pizza rolls. Aaack! Need! Water!

Oooh thanks for the movie suggestion! I'm glad you are having such a wonderful time. It makes me wish I had actually stayed in a dorm during college instead of living at home :o(

I really should try Glee cause I've been hearing good things. Glad your first day of class wasn't so bad. I can't wait to hear what tomorrow brings. Your classrooms (inside a parking garage really???) are certainly more interesting.

Lol, I've watched Glee this morning instead of doing my summer homework.

Lea Michele is a freaking powerhouse, but it's weird seeing her in something that she doesn't die in.

Glee! Aaaaah, I'm so excited. Fox psyched us up for it before the summer started. But now it's finally here.

I went to the Amish country two years ago with my school. After returning home, I googled them because they were so fascinating. I watched that documentary on youtube and it was amazing (from what I remember.) It was just very interesting. I think one girl ends up joining society? Yeah. It was really, really interesting to see how their lives are.

GLEEEEE.

I actually won a Glee t-shirt on Twitter and I was hoping it'd be here for the episode tomorrow. However, it is not.

coolio about the rumspring (agh i can't spell it), but that thing! I've read some fictional books based on the real traditions of the Amish life and rumspring, it's really interesting, i think you should check them out if you found that documentary interesting!
The series is called Abraham's daughter.
Hayley, I've been a bit depressed these past days and your vlogs have really cheered me up.
Thank you . :)

Cool! I'm glad your class seemed good and you have your sister around to hang out with.

I, too, am really excited for Glee, but because I don't have TV, and Hulu only works in the U.S., I'll have to buy it on iTunes to see it. Oh well, I'm sure it'll be worth it. :)

Glee
That's surprisingly close to one of my many passwords I have. Hack me up if ya wanna talk to the Gorilla for free.
Would love to meet a stupid ho-ho (the best kind), and for people who aren't here right now-those are my favorites. I'm one of them myself.

Hi ya Hayley!

Apparently the "Freshman Fifteen" is only really fifteen for people who drink a lot. Otherwise, it's closer to 2-7.

I watched that Amish documentary in my English class last semester, we had to write some kind of essay regarding the film and something to do with literary devices. I also liked it, it had a good perspective and it was kinda funny at times as well.
I can't wait for GLEE!! I'm excited. Glad to hear everything is going swell.

Glad your college experiences basically parallel your previous worries, and show that you obviously are adapting tons better than you thought! :)

That's a great documentary. I really recommend you try the directors commentary which is just as interesting as the movie. it was great to hear all the behind the scenes stuff and all the info that they couldn't fit in to the movie.

I feel so incredibly lucky that I got to go and meet the cast of Glee at their Hot Topic tour. Now I just need to find a frame for my signed poster!

(also I have to go and hi-jack my friends apartment, because we do not have an antenna for our tv, lol!)

My Religious Studies coursework was about homosexuality in the Christian Church. We got to pick a topic and I chose 'Homosexuals in the ministry of the Anglican Communion'. Few thigns I have ever done in school have been so fascinating. Lucky you!

Could I BE any more jealous that you have a class called Gender and Sexuality in Judeo-Christianity? I could not. Tell us all about the stuff you learn in this blog? Please? If you do I will attempt to provide thoughtful and insightful comments which contribute towards impressive and insightful homework!

And I'm glad that college is still making you happy :)

Not sure if this is the same one you are talking about, but there was a 20/20 episode about that Amish ritual pretty recently that I watched this past weekend (it was DVR'd, so I'm not sure when it actually aired). I found it really interesting, also.

I've been waiting for Glee's new season since its premiere. I am SO excited. I'm going to postpone doing my math homework for it, lol. Ah, college procrastination. (I'm a freshman, too, woot.)
