Oh man. (Nice, huh?)

I confess. I can't keep up the whole omg-I'm-so-happy-for-no-reason-whatsoever shtick forever. There is a reason. And this reason is a boy.

Except... is it? If you follow my tweets, you'll know that I've been pondering all day about where to draw the line between "boy" and "man." It's a daunting concept-- I'm now old enough to have this be a legitimate concern. Graham, my friend who got married and moved to New York last year, is unarguably a Man at twenty-one. But would I have called him that last January? I don't know. Probably not... but I'd attribute that more to the fact that I was in high school, and high schoolers don't have friends who are Men. And take my big brother, for example. He's funny in the youthful, goofball way, and he always will be, but he's in law school, and he's a man. I don't mean to sound like a Seventeen Magazine advice column, but I can't help but notice that all the Boys around me are suddenly, like, grown-ups.

I could have dealt with that three weeks ago, before I knew Him. But if it weren't already enough that I'm falling for someone more quickly and deeply than I ever have in my life, it's a genuine possibility that I am falling for my first ever, well... man.

Weird.

Don't worry, you don't sound like Seventeen. They're too busy telling people how to flirt obnoxiously.

As for the question about men/boys...Unfortunately, I think I will be calling them boys for a very long time.

Is this the cheesy breadstick guy making a return to Hayley's blog?
*hopes it is, because that would be awesome*

<3 i just got my first kiss tonight. I feel like the world should know via Hayley's blog comments.

Aww Hayley, things sound like they're really going your way. As for men vs. boys, well, I think all men tend to revert back to being boys all the time, particularly when they're with their friends. I've just come to the conclusion that the boy is always going to be part of the man.
I hope things work out for this boy/man, sounds like you're really falling for him. Good luck! :)

When Hayley is happy, it makes me happy, too :)
And hooray for Annie!

Oh, hey, girl talk. I'm still beating you in the Chipotle quest/challenge/thingy. STEP IT UP.

I've been having the same issues (if they could be accurately referred to as such) with my current first-proper-serious boyfriend. I feel too young to call him a man but I suppose technically he is one. I'd never admit that to his face though.
Good to hear everythings going super fine and dandy for you and it's awesome to see you back in the blogosphere if I may say so ^__^

Congrats to Annie-the-commenter! So exciting.

I think regularly about whether I should be calling "boys" "men" instead. I usually default to "guys" because it sounds less likely to offend or be wrong or... weird me out. But what of us? Are we women? Girls? Ladies?! Some of those insinuate that we ought to now be called "ma'am," which I sure as heck am not down with, even at 25.

It is extremely strange being this age, isn't it, Hayley? I'm 18 and ever since I've turned 18 I've been pondering similar questions.
It's surreal to wake up one day and be considered a child and then wake up the next and be an adult.
I'm having some difficulties (kind of, I guess) coming to terms with that.
Like, I am an adult, but I find it weird to have the freedom to make my own choices for once. You know what I mean? Or am I crazy? Ahaha.

Anyway, I love the fact that you are happy and falling for a man. Happy Hayley makes for Happy Hayley Blog Readers.

Yey! Falling for a man! That is undoubtedly the best bit of my first year of Uni so far.
Though as he *did* play Zelda on my DS all of yesterday I would also have to say he is a boy too. Man/boys, who can be both mature and childish depending on the time, are probably best anyway.

Best Wishes!

Aww Hayley! I'm so happy for you (: Does this certain "man" (oh, that sounds so weird) know about your feelings?

Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyy
(When you vicariously live through some youtube girl, you can't help but be overjoyed for/with her when she is overjoyed.)
So yayyyyyyyyyy

Britney said it best when she told us that she is "not a girl; not yet a woman." Profound.
I'm 18 but I'm really either an 11 year old boy or a 37 year old man; I can't decide which.

Congratulations Annie!!! Still yet moar yayyyyyy

Woah snap Here is something: I just realized that Mr. Boy-Man will presumably see this post and very well might read these comments. So hi sir! You're a lucky fella. You're probably cool, since Hayley likes you. Lemme tell you something though; if you don't treat her right, you're gonna have a lot of people who will stop at nothing to fuck you up OVER the internet. And you don't even wanna KNOW how that works.

Also, I get the feeling that you're a youtube person too. I'm gonna geek out if you're somebody else internet-famous. Like, if it turns out you're, say... Charlie hahahaha

They're not men until grad school/marriage/a real job.

... I don't actually think that's true, but it's a good dividing line between men and boys.

I'm so happy to hear you happy. First true loves can be very intoxicating. Just be careful, young girl. Life does not always end in happily ever after for college freshmen.

I still call my boyfriend, "the boy." Though, he's actually a man with a lot of manly responsibilities that I can't fully understand at this point in my life. So, even though he's a man...I really still feel like a girl.

That was the weird thing about going to college for me...they all look the same, so how do you tell the difference? :P

Good luck with all that Hayley, I'm sure you'll figure it out like Danny Tamborelli.

As always, have a good day!

I heard this before, they dont want to call him "boyfriend", and they start calling him man.

Hayley, just call him by his name, cause this "man" stuff is just trying to grow up with out being grown up.

Or does the conversation go.." no he's not my boyfriend, he's my manfriend"?

As always, I'm up to throw up since you have once again chosen some one over me...
see ya, Hayley (phhhhtt)

How exciting! I don't mean Mr. Potential, exciting as he is - I mean that it's exciting when things in your world change your perception of it. Good luck!

One more thought . . . a boy becomes man when he begins to worry more about others than himself.

I'm so happy at the moment! I keep track of all the 5AG's love lives, which is sad, but I get to live vicariously through ALL OF YOU.

I'm glad about this. I really hope this is not unrequited falling. Do we get a name, Hayley? Pleassee?

Awesome and beautiful post. I now want to reread your Red entry.

hmm... Girl talk really isn't my forte. But I guess I'll place my bid that the transformation is complete when you stop wearing Axe. XD

Isn't it kinda ironic that starting to fall for a man makes you feel and giggle like a little girl? At least that is the way it happens for me.

I am having little girl giggles for you.

Congrats Hayley!
And I don't think any guy is ever really 100% a "man". They're always going to have their moments, some more than others :]

I am so happy you're back. You gotta keep us posted when it comes to this guy of yours.

That's what I say when I'm too timid to make the distinct difference between boy and man: Guy. It works, right? :]

I have a sneaking suspicion that Hayley only wrote this blog because of the new nail color. X]
But it's nice to know you're so happy. You totally deserve it.

I think the viewers are craving some juicy details of this man.

comelygrace said...

Hah, love punny titles! :) And men. Not tryin'a brag (okay, maybe I am) but I'm always proud of my boyfriend for having a big boy engineering job on the Navy Base when we're not at school and lined up after he graduates. It comforts me to know that he can take care of me in the future.

Why are they called "boy"friends and not something more sophisticated...I understand "manfriend" or "manlove" sounds kind of creepy, but how did "boyfriend" originate? Hmm, thoughts to ponder.

Elisabeth said...

As other people have already said, I just default to 'guy' when they're at that in-between age. Because it's not really a line, but a gradation between the two.

Also, yay for your love life :)

Ana said...

Ah, yes, falling in love easily. Can't wait until I get into college this year.

I know this isn't much a comment, but I just had to mention that my toes are the same color at the moment.

I'm sorry, that wasn't heartfelt at all.

I'd probably have to agree with Sarah on this one. You definitely don't sound like Seventeen, not that I've ever read one...or anything.

As for the boy to man, I think there are different stages where will slowly graduate to the stage of man, but as we grow older we will still always have our boyishness and I wouldn't have it any other way. That side of me is what sets me apart from conformity.

Gerarda said...

I'm almost in my 2nd year at uni and I'm pretty sure all my guy friends barely men. they are more like what you would call boys, even my ex-boyfriend who's 21 (22 this year) is more like a boy then a man. I guess they slip in and out of being men and boys and it's just part of who they are. I wish they were a bit more mature sometimes though...
