Today was beautiful!

I was in pajamas at 10:30 last night, singing along to songs from the Potter musical, when Jess called and asked me to come over. We'd planned to hang out all day long today, but Jess wanted a head start. I'm a morning person, and neither of us really like having people in our houses, so Jess and I have somehow never been prone to slumber parties. Fourteen years of inseparable friendship, and I couldn't remember more than one time we'd had a one-on-one sleepover. Through my whines of protest, Jess decided it was time to fix that problem. And as much as I hate sleeping on couches and forgoing proper hygiene for candy and TV, my best friend is more persuasive. I went.

We suck at sleepovers. We stood in her living room for a few seconds, looking at each other expectantly. What were we supposed to do? Gossip about boys? Read magazines? We ended up discussing food in great detail, as always, and falling asleep. I value every second with Jess, and I have more fun talking to her about salsa than I do having important conversations with most other people, but as far as slumber parties go, I don't think we were missing out on much by omitting them.

It was okay, though, because the next afternoon, today, was big and blue and beautiful. We went to our park, wearing what we'd slept in, and had our minds blown by the gorgeousness of the day. Descriptions of blue skies bore me, but today's sky was the kind of blue that makes you care about blue skies. The sun hit every bit of our bodies, making every color seem like it'd been photoshopped. Jess's pale skin was paper white, her hair was burnt red, and her eyes went from their usual blue to a crazy cyan reflection of the sky. We sprawled out in the grass with the bottoms of our shirts folded over so our bellybuttons could breathe, we rolled downhill, we ran in nonsensical circles. We pretended to bite the clouds as we swung toward them on the swings. My serotonin-flooded brain could think of nothing else but how amazing everything was, how much I felt like Lily Evans, and how the present would turn into one of those memories I'll replay in my head for the rest of my life. Today was a Patronus.

Even hours later, it ended too soon. We had Robeks smoothies for lunch at 3:00, and before we could finish painting our nails together (such a slumber party activity! Why didn't we do that last night?!) my mother text-message-harassed me to come home. I took a shower and pouted for a bit, but she consented to me leaving to see a movie with Jess. I'm leaving now to see 500 Days of Summer, which I'm superexcited to soak up. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow!

Sexy: Oh my gosh. Everything. I'm still on a high.

  1. I see you're about to hit 20,000 subscribers! Congrats. Although, I think Paris Hilton's STD's are still higher.

And you better s'more-binge, and soon, because summer is almost over. [At least for me. I have school in about 2 weeks...] And you better film it. Or use the always-resourceful blogTV.

And you having blue skies? Wow. Here in Connecticut, it was dark, thunderous, and rain. Which, I love. But I guess this really shouldn't come as a shock. It's not like it's the same weather everywhere in the world. Oh, and the bad weather meant that I didn't have to paint my grandparents new 60-foot ramp. Sometimes, mother nature just gives me freebies. I like them.

  2. 500 Days of Summer was so good! It renewed my crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt, which has had varying intensities since I saw 10 Things I Hate About You. I can't wait to read your thoughts on it.

  3. Hi Hayley!

So, my day today has been pretty shit-tastic. I just want you to know that this blog significantly improved it. I like vicariously living through you. :) Yeah, that's right, your writing is so well-crafted and descriptive that I actually feel like I have a super awesome best friend who pretends to eat clouds with me!

    Anyway, thanks.

  5. In NJ it rained sheets of ugly water. It also caused the ugly power box to go out.

500 Days of Summer was cool. (:

Your blog washed away the nasty feeling I got from suffering through Ponyo. Thanks. :D

  6. Oh, I forgot to mention the fact that I got the whole West Side Story "I Feel Pretty/Me Siento Hermosa" vibe from your post. (Idk which version I like better, frankly.)

  7. I can never sleep at my friend's houses. So I just stay up, which causes a slap happy period to ensue. I dance until they wake up from my flailing limbs and make as many Your Mom joke as possible.

  8. Ah, that sounds amazing. Your non-description of the blue sky was the best description I've ever read. The feeling that everything had been photoshopped...I can picture it so well.
Just reading this made me happier than I was before. I'm happy that YOU experienced this, at least.

  10. 500 days of summer is fantastic! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did :)

I've never been much of a sleepover person either, and I recently had my younger cousin over for two days. Needless to say, she seemed totally bored-- even more so than your average 15 year old girl. It was still kind of nice to spend time with her, I guess. But it made me feel like such a failure in the teen/preteen era of my life.

  11. I'm glad you've had such a great day Hayley. Blue skies are always lovely, though I like mine best on crisp autumn days when I don't have to go to school.

Tonight in Atlanta we had the opposite of blue skies. Thunder and lightning, HEAVY rain. I was at a busy intersection and all of the lights when out: the traffic lights, street lights and McDonald, Chevron and all of the businesses around me were all pitch black. I obviously couldn't see anything. So I pulled into the YMCA parking lot to let the rain let up. While I was waiting I heard the Black-Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" and it inspired me to go on. Lucky for me once I got out into residential areas the lights were back on and I got home slowly, but safely.

I don't know exactly know why I wrote this. I suppose the song just reminded me of you.

  12. "Today was a Patronus." is such an excellent way of putting it. I think that phrase makes it that much easier to imagine the already-detailed weather and mood.

I live in NJ, and I was about to go outside today but it started raining. :( I'm jealous of your lovely weather! And it's so hot and humid, too. Hopefully after the rain has subsided it'll be cooler!

500 Days of Summer, awesome! I want to see that so badly. I saw The Time Traveler's Wife this week and have to say I think 500 Days of Summer will be much better. But maybe it's because I read The Time Traveler's Wife and it was a lot different as a movie.

I'm glad you had a great day! Especially with school starting up soon, we all need a little bit of unadulterated joy. Not to say I hate school, but things are definitely different in the summer.

  13. Salsa
I went to this Mexican place once and had salsa, only it was green and we called it Guacamole.

    Ya, I got nothing girl.

    Later Hayley :)

and Catherine--turn on the freaking headlights--dang!

  14. I wish I had a friend that I could have so much fun with, you make my best days with friends seem plain. I hope you enjoyed the movie Hayley, and I hope to read you tomorrow.

  15. I'm like that with my best friend, we can spend hours and hours talking but apart from guide camps we've had barely a handful of sleepovers... I think we know we'd just never shut up and we respect each other's need for sleep far too much!
Our days of Patronus memory forming are getting fewer though. :(

  16. 500 Days of Summer isn't out over here yet, which makes me sad because I have a huge crush on Matthew Gray Gubler, and although he's not a main character, I'd see anything with him in! And add Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel and you've got one of my new favourite films :')

  17. That sounds like a completely idyllic day, I love the comment about letting your bellybuttons breathe :) I do that automatically whenever I lie down and didn't know why but it finally makes sense!

  19. Whoa. That's weird. That's exactly what I was doing-sitting in pajamas singing along with the Potter musical. Even though you didn't wanna go, it sounds like you had an awesome time. And that sky sounds gorgeous! We haven't had skies that blue in a long time.

  20. I absolutely love that description: "Today was a Patronus." You have such a way with words.

  21. "How much I felt like Lily Evans"...

You know, Lily has always been one character in Harry Potter that I really, really love, even though she hardly gets any 'screen time'. I don't have boys fighting over me the way she did (haha), but there's something about her that I've always been able to relate to. I love her.

  23. 500 days was okay, but I doubt I'll ever have the desire to watch it again. I only remotely enjoyed for its many film history nods (not just references to old movies, but the style used).

  24. Sounds like a great day. I remember when I was a kid we'd try to touch the clouds with our feet while we played on the swing set.
500 Days of Summer is pretty damn good. The soundtrack is niiiiccee.
