My facebook and twitter were blowing up with a lot of my friends saying how wrong the President was and how the country was under the rule of an idiot. And I just couldn't believe how close minded and judgmental my Christian friends were.
I simply believe God loves everyone, no matter what lifestyle they've chosen. I have a devil-m...(Continued from previous comment)
I have a devil-may-care view towards most theological professions. I test and try most doctrine by life and experience. A lot of my Christian friends have branded some of my statements as heretical. Unorthodox is generally the best label I can hope for in a commerce of faith. However, the issue of homosexuality has become one that I find mainline protestantism and Catholicism have the right answer about, although perhaps the wrong attitude.

The reason this issue has become a titanic problem for people today is that every single person in the US seems to be primarily obsessed with finding a mate. It is how we have been trained to seek affirmation, declaration of value, and fulfillment. We do not turn to community, friendship, and family.

In the face of a possible void of value, fulfillment, and affirmation, how can people not cry out that they too should be able to indulge in their sexual partnerships? People who cannot rewire themselves to feel attraction towards the opposite sex feel condemned to these invisible anxieties by their biology.

The greater wrong is not with homosexuals, but in the idea that affirmation comes in the form of romantic partnerships. For some, it undoubtedly does. However, reading Paul's visions of the church and of what Christian love is, you don't find copulation. You find community. Affirmation, value, and fulfillment come as products of loving the people around you. This is the agape love that is not erotic or platonic. Our continual refusal to start living in these communities of love is what creates this rupture in human relationships.

If anything I have said at all has interested you, I recommend reading the works of a theologian named Deitrich Bonhoeffer. He was hanged in a Nazi concentration camp for opposing Hitler. The Cost of Discipleship and Life Together speak a lot about what a Christian love should look like.

Also, I wish the comment boxes had wider margins so most of these comments would be readable.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937874428494399399.post-12864760201886029752011-12-19T14:04:23.290-04:002011-12-19T14:04:23.290-04:00This is way late to the party, but I think there a...This is way late to the party, but I think there are still some things to be said on this count.

I kind of shy away from viewing homosexual activity as a sanctioned way of living a Christian life.

I am indeed familiar with the context of Leviticus, however there is something beyond the bourgeois comment about shellfish and goatees.

There were three classes of law in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. One was ritual cleanliness (shellfish, water, etc. stuff Jesus basically threw out completely), cultural law (haircuts, tattoos, other stuff basically meant to keep Israel from thinking they were like the not-too-well-behaved tribes around them), and moral laws. Moral laws were the hard hitters. Those were the ten-commandments, the laws of reparation for damages done, and all of the things that Jesus still affirmed. After all, he said "I have not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it."

Homosexual behavior happens to fall into that last category. Jesus makes his case clear for how Christians are to behave.

He does this in a somewhat-famous story that most people know and quote the first half of. A woman who was guilty of adultery was about to get stoned to death when Jesus stepped in and made that famous remark "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." And then the story ended, right?

Actually, when the men had departed, he turned to the woman and said "Go now and sin no more."

Jesus' policy towards the gays? Love them, defend them, care for them, but know that this is not what God has in mind for them.

Now you might be asking how an adulterous woman equates with a gay person. Well, adultery meant a different thing to Israelites. It encompassed an entire realm of sexual sin rather than being a legal term of infidelity. Homosexual behavior happened to fall under that umbrella of adultery (which, again, was a violation of the moral law)

It's quite possible that the woman in the passage was a lesbian.

We, however, traditionally read it as an unfaithful spouse.

The term "gay rights" is a bit problematic. My friends have a hard time finding a more strident advocate of human rights than I. But they also have a hard time finding a more venomous critic of human entitlement and privilege.

Many of the issues labelled "gay rights" are carefully mispresented cases of gay entitlement. Marriage is one of the primary fields.

I, like almost all Americans, support civil unions. I'm not alone. Elton John agrees with me. Many gay political activists agree with me. Terrible things happen to the church "coincidentally" when gay marriage is legalized. Usually within weeks, lawsuits immediately foment against religious institutions when gay marriage is passed. Churches are either punished by the state (such as the Catholic adoption agency in Massachusetts)or else subjected to horrific legal fees while GLAAD and the ACLU work pro-bono and cover court fees for the suing party.

Civil unions are fair, secular, and uphold the rights of both gay and straight people. An argument in civil unions is an argument in terms of human rights, and by extension, gay rights. Gay marriage, as it devalues and harms the rights of people, is a matter of entitlement and privilege. There is no right that entitles one to diminish another.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937874428494399399.post-83662175051534432232011-04-10T17:41:22.255-04:002011-04-10T17:41:22.255-04:00Haley, this amazing. There are different denominations, and there are quite a few (Including mine) that actually support gay rights. Most of those laws were made a time long ago, so we are not supposed to follow them. There are verses abou...I gott say I love the post. There are verses about homosexuality in the new testament, but they are written by Paul. Jesus says, Love the Lord your God and Love your neighbour as yourself. Christ came not to give new laws, but to fulfill the law of the old testament.

Anyway, not to get preachy or ranty or anything, but the creation story as a case for hetero as opposed to homo, there's an easy argument to make there: God made a man and a woman because otherwise they couldn't have babies. Pure and simple. Is this a case for homosexuality being an abomination? Obviously it is to some people, but to me, not so much.

Also, if you're gonna get all Biblically literal like some of the commenters here, Biblical literalism is a movement that only started up for the most part about a hundred years ago. Prior to that, in the medieval period and even earlier, Biblical interpretation was far from literal. Augustine and other Christian philosophers understood that each book of the Bible was written by a different person, perhaps with divine inspiration, but far from being divinely written, which does not make the Bible inerrant. Each book is also written for a different purpose (i.e. Storytelling, Lineage recording, Letter writing, etc.)

I know those who have a basis in Biblical literalism and who believe every word from the mouth of James Dobson and other contemporary "philosophers" will disagree and find fault with my argument. But the best I can say is, to each his own, and God loves everyone, and the Bible is open to contextualization and interpretation. No book, not even the Bible, is divine in itself, but only in what a person can take away from his or her reading with a basis in faith and with a certain amount of reason.

Sorry about the rant. I like your post!!!Rob Bittnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16620557469358222306noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937874428494399399.post-68994639583761761062011-02-10T04:30:21.703-04:002011-02-10T04:30:21.703-04:00There are definitely verses in the new testament o...There are definitely verses in the new testament on homosexuality. It is unnatural, and not how God created sexuality to be, but we live in a broken world full of sinners, WE'RE ALL SINNERS. And I personally believe that homosexuality is a sin(1 Cor 6:9; 1 Tim 1:10). Not in any way unlike the ones you and I have both committed(Rom 3:9-20), but with equal measure, not in any way excusable before God (1 Cor. 6:9-11) however homosexuals should not be ostracized or attacked (1 Cor. 5:9-10) and should be loved selflessly, we should expect nothing in return and be willing to receive pain in return (James 2:8).
One of the multiple expressions of that love which cannot be avoided is to tell them of the Gospel (1 Cor 9:16) and the reality of the eternal danger of unrepentant sin (2 Peter 2:4-6), but this cannot be done by itself (1 Thess. 1:5). I believe the way the church is for the most part treating them is quite ironically unbiblical; but on the same hand homosexuality does not become any less of a sin because of the church's actions. And yes the old covenant was broken, so no we do not live by the laws in Leviticus. But in the same way the Old Testament is still God's word and still rings true through all the ages and to the ends of the universe, and nothing will change that. Both the old and new testament are pure God-breathed truth, and there are also different stories in the old testament, not laws in Leviticus, such as the destruction of Sodom (a town of homosexuals, hence where the word sodomy comes from), that show God's heart towards homosexuals. But like I said before they should all be loved, and respected, though we should not stand idol and allow them to burn in their sin. I love every single homosexual, and sinner on this planet, because I have been called by my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to do so. However, I will not stand idly and allow this corrupt to fill a world I so desire to bring to Jesus and bring into the courts of His Kingdom. I love you, and absolutely respect your opinion, however I felt your theology was a little inaccurate. I hope that in no way you feel judged, attacked, or put down by my comment, that was not at all the intent. I just would like you to know that the belief homosexuality is unnatural is definitely not an unbiblical idea, I have absolutely no hatred for you or any homosexuals.
Grace and Peace.Savannahnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937874428494399399.post-21775452547742591482010-11-24T17:15:19.695-04:002010-11-24T17:15:19.695-04:00This is exactly right. That is what Christians are supposed to show, love and acceptance of all. The church that I go to had a gay person there, and we were all perfectly fine (he moved to America just over a year ago), everyone just accepted it.
