Japing

Studying English at the university level has taught me a few things. First, the word "postmodern" is misused and abused and annoying as hell. Second, try to throw the word "misogyny" into every paper you write because it will make female teachers like you and male teachers afraid of you. And third, don't effing wait until the last effing minute to write an effing paper or else you'll be up all effing night waiting for effing video files to render and writing an effing blog post even though you're too effing tired to be co-effing-herent. Effing.

Still, here I am. Just tonight, I was talking to a good friend about our self-improvement plans-- his being to value his time more and mine being to find more balance/stop putting all my energy into one basket-- and the conversation reminded me that I need to write for fun at least once a day. I spend so much of my time churning out lame essays and working on the not-at-all-lame-but-still-kind-of-stressful book, and if I don't stop to smell the Blogger roses every now and then, I'll start holding a grudge against my keyboard. So here we are. Let's have fun. Let's talk about something fun.

...I don't remember what fun is. Hold on; I'll google it.

Oh, awesome. According to this, "sport" is a synonym and "jape" is a concept that exists. I don't really know what a jape is, but it's sure going to be sport throwing it into conversation for the rest of my life.

My train of thought has derailed and caught on fire and now Anastasia is fleeing from it-- where was I? Nowhere? Perfect.

I had a really pleasant weekend. My legs are starting to form these super intensely hardcore muscle lines from all the running I've been doing, including five miles on Friday afternoon (fear me!), after which I hung out with a man I'm... hanging out with. The ellipsis wasn't meant to make that sound suggestive and cosmopolitan; I just don't know what the proper terminology is for not-friending/not-dating. Anyway, then Saturday was spent being suggestive and cosmopolitan and throwing around horrible attempts at sex-related wordplay, seeing as me and a few of my friends rented five Sex and the City DVDs. We sat on my couch for hours, accomplished less than nothing, ate too much popcorn, and felt wonderful. What is it about shows that are categorically awful that makes them so damn pleasant to stare at all day? I mean, prop me up in front of Kim Cattrall long enough and I'll be pretending to hold a martini and putting unnecessary emphasis on the word "hard" for the rest of the week. And doing that thing where she takes too much breath in through her nose and holds vowel sounds too long. What is that?

That brings us to today, Sunday (it's still Sunday until I fall asleep, right?), which I put to great use by neglecting my stupid paper in order to get a lot of work-work done and organize my calendar and watch old Very Mary-Kate episodes. I'm exhausted. Like try-to-describe-Kim-Cattrall's-speech-patterns-in-terms-of-breath-placement exhausted. As soon as this video finishes exporting, I'm going to fall asleep and will myself to dream about attacking homework assignments repeatedly with a chainsaw. And if anyone or anything tries to stand in my way, I'll turn the chainsaw on them and make them listen to audio files of Kim Cattrall saying the word "penis" over and over again until I get that effing sleep.

Nah. I'm just japing with you.

P.S. I posted a new main channel video on Thursday and I really like this one, so, like, you know. I hope you do too.

Yes I definitely need to get back into writing for fun on a daily basis. Just as important as daily exercise really, stretching that writing muscle. But the essays and the dissertation and everything just exhaust it. Definitely need to start earlier in the day with the fun writing part!

Writing for fun is the HARDest thing to do when you are writing essays, but alas, it must be done. Jealous of your running commitment. I kind of gave mine up for today... damn. I wish I could steal your muscle ache, it's the best thing in the world.

Ps. LOVE the new video!

I have the opposite problem. I do too much writing for fun. After a year out saving for university I'm scared that when I eventually do get there, I'm going to have forgotten how to write an essay.

Your political views are awesome :)

I need to rewatch more old shows. I have so much media to catch up on that I can barely handle it. saw True Grit which was fun and tried to watch Tiny Furniture which I gave up half way though. Which I was a bit surprised by as I had heard good things and the trailer for the new HBO show Girls looks great. I guess we'll see. Been watching Boardwalk Empire as well which is good and has more naked people then I have ever seen in a tv show.

I love hearing about what what you're studying because I'm considering studying English at university level too :)

I can't even begin to deal with the sentence about your train of thought and Anastasia fleeing from it hahaha.
Also on a somewhat unrelated note, it's because of your post about The Fault in our Stars that I decided to read it. So...thanks! It was really amazing. :)

Effing sounds teenagery. Fucking is how adults do it. Fucking. Fucking. Mmmmm.

I'm similar to Lydia. However, I'm already at University and all of the personal, "fun" writing I've been doing is making it hard for me to get the writing I need to do done. Hayley, I've been following your blog for over a year now (as well as keeping up with you and the other girls from 5AG on Youtube from the beginning) but I've never so much as left a comment. Blogs like yours are what got me to start my own. :)

My writing for fun hasn't managed to evolve past my thinking-about-what-I-want-to-write-for-fun stage lately. But at least I apparently have time to stare at the ceiling for several hours before getting tired and falling asleep every day. :P

i like sex and the city....its so bad its good. but i say that about all bad shows i like

I am all for you doing more fun writing, especially when that mean we get to read it!

Right now I'm doing fun writing, but on a cram-deadline. Stupid, busy-but-not-really-that-busy me, is somehow typing like mad to finish <3 submissions (yes, in the plural. I apologize in advance.) But maybe the panic just makes it more of a lark. Or maybe I'm an idiot.

I've also recently been non-friending/non-dating with a guy. There should be a proper word for that situation.

On a different level, for me it's not about writing for fun or because I have to, it's about writing that is in itself fun. As in, I'm finding it harder and harder to write serious things because either a) I'm afraid of being cliche or unrealistic or emo or b) it hurts too much (emo!) to actually write about the things I do care about.
Hmnnnn.

Your Sex and the City reference made me want to watch The Hills, for some reason. But I won't. I mean, because I don't know if it's bad enough to be good. Also, it does this weird thing where it says it's reality, but doesn't totally seem it, so I don't know whether to laugh or cry when Audrina is fretting over Justin Bobby.
What were we talking about again?

So perfect. That first paragraph so completely resonates with me right now. Will be turning in an effing paper of my own tomorrow, one day late, because of videos and blog poems, and writing other things I wanted to instead of working on the effing paper. joy.

This was a good read. Made me smile :) For a tired person, you write pretty energetically!
Your legs sound kinda sexy. I'm a bit jealous.
And you are so right about SATC!

i just wanted you to know that you inspired me to start working out! my university fees cover free a gym membership so i decided to take advantage of that after reading your blog posts about running :) so thank you for inspiring me to take the initiative! (also i discovered that i have no core and i'm in so much pain, but i know it will be worth it!!)

I'm with Rose24. You and a few other people have helped me make the decision to stop sitting around and wishing for things, and instead make the things happen for myself. Examples? Fitness, Writing, Youtubing, Educating etc.

Because of this blog post, I learned the word "japing," which I used today on my sociology midterm. Thank you, Hayley!

Writing for fun is something I used to always neglect for really long periods of time, but I'm actually pretty happy with how regularly I do so now. :) Hope to actually keep it up. Love your new video! Also, good on ya for the running. Wow.

for some reason i missed this post, but let me say, it was quite a quality post. I was very much amused by how you...funned with us. xD

I used the phrase "I found the work fun and rewarding" in a fairly informal paper I wrote for AP lit, and my teacher told me fun wasn't an adjective :| wherever you found that definition tells me otherwise... haha.
