Packing Procrastination

Firstly, (500) Days of Summer was everything I was promised it'd be. I laughed louder than I ordinarily would in a theater, I smiled uncontrollably a few times, and whenever something was depressing, I felt that literal sinking feeling in my chest as if I were being dumped. I recommend Summer to anybody who loves movies, has ever been attracted to another person, or needs to feel a story intensely.

Secondly, I did absolutely nothing today but clean and pack for college. The floor of my bedroom is a labyrinth of clothes I haven't seen in years, my hands are sick of refolding stubborn sweaters, and I'm more concerned than ever about the probable chance that I won't fit half my crap into my little dorm. I know I should be a big girl and choose ONE of the six white camisoles, but I keep catching glimpses into the future, in which I'm wearing one white camisole, and all hell is breaking loose. All hell that could have been contained, were I wearing a different white camisole. What if I spill something bright red and stainy on the white camisole, and I have some kind of twist-of-fate need for a white camisole later that day? What if the white camisole gets lonely? If I bring two, will the others feel left out? Can I really pick favorites like that? What if the previously-specified hell is destined to break loose unless all six white camisoles are in Athens at my disposal?

It's realistic, troubling internal debates like this that have been plaguing me all day long. I've let my mind wander to the point that I nearly justified packing my junior prom dress. When they're all in one place, I appear to have enough t-shirts to clothe the von Trapps for the next decade, and I can't seem to narrow down the stack. I never before fancied myself a pack-rat, but I guess my room's just big enough that I never needed to face the reality that I am. I seriously, seriously am. And it's wreaking havoc on my mother's temper to see the ever-growing mass of pajamas and Soffe shorts accumulate on my rug.

I have a really good grasp on the situation, though, as I'm curled into the only uncovered corner of my bed, observing the surrounding chaos, and writing a blog. If Mom asks, blogging is an essential aspect of packing. For example, I need to recharge and meditate on pressing issues like white camisoles, or the pressure of college will get to me. Yeah. And I need to be listening to Miley Cyrus Radio on Pandora, because it will, um, energize me. And I need to be writing facebook notes, because... I... need to.

Sigh. Fine. I'll finish cleaning, but it's not just because I can sense your disapproving head-shakes, reader. I'll finish cleaning out of unadulterated fear that my mother will come back in here and turn into the Incredible Hulk. See what I do for you guys? I RISK MY VERY LIFE.

Sexy: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He's too skinny for my taste, but he has a dreamy face. It took an imdb article and an entire movie of my drooling and fantasizing before I realized who he is. He's Cameron from 10 Things I Hate About You! But with his voice fully changed! There you go, Cameron. You went from a cute teenager to a smokin' man.
Unsexy: The fact that Kathleen leaves tomorrow for school. She stopped over to hug me goodbye, and it frigging sucks with how many more friends I'm going to have to have similar encounters.

Chipotle burritos this year: 27
S'mores this summer: 6
White camisoles on my floor: 6
Subscribers: 19,673

Bye, guys! Hopefully I'll see you tomorrow. <3

I loved 500 days of summer! Zooey Deschanel is so perfect for that character, I admire her so much!

You can justify bringing clothes you may never wear as costumes for videos. Who cares if you never wear them, nobody will ever question that excuse.

As for the rest, I can't really say much, since 1. I haven't seen 500 Days of Summer and 2. I haven't yet gone to college. But I do hope everything will turn out great for you!

Good luck with the packing woes, don't go too crazy over it.

Coming home in the summer (if you're doing that) after two semesters will be in my experience more traumatic.

I'm sure that you'll bring the house down with your awesome Hayley, regardless of what you're wearing.

I said good-bye last night, rather this morning, at 1 am to a few of my close friends. It sucks. I just went through the same debacle of whiteness except with t-shirts, too. I brought all of them, if that helps.

Oh God, I haven't even started packing yet but I am dreading it because I am in the same situation as you. I just have too much stuff. It sickens me how much stuff I have and how attached I am to it all. Argh!

And those goodbyes to friends? They get worse the more people you say goodbye to. I've spent the week saying at least one goodbye a night (too much crying in one week...i'm an emotional wreck). Some of my friends will be over ten hours away next year. Talk about a hard goodbye.

I love that I can read your blog and find out that you are going through exactly the same things that I am.

Ah! I just found out that Zooey Dechanel and Joseph have already worked together. Look up the Manic trailer!

Ha, sorry. I loved Summer and I thought it was an amazingly life-changing movie and now am semi obsessed with them.

Speaking of Miley Cyrus: you've caused me to develop a relationship with Miley Cyrus very similar to yours... Thanks a lot.

I feel for you, Hayley, I really do. Being a packrat can be so stressful sometimes. At least your room is big enough to store it all. My room is tiny. I've had to move things into a completely separate house before.
I say, take 2 white camis. It's all you'll really need.

Katherine said...

Hayley, are you a Gilmore Girls fan? I can't remember. The reason I ask is because your inner conflict concerning your white camisoles reminded me of a Lorelei and Rory moment. Which made me smile immensely because I love Gilmore Girls and I love reading your blog (even if this is my first comment to one of your posts. Hi! :D)

Thanks for taking time out of packing to blog for us! Good luck with college!!! DFTBA!

Your "Sexy:" is so true. I was like "I KNOW WHO THIS GUY IS WHY CAN'T I PLACE HIM!" and it's totally Cameron ;)

i legitimately wrote a facebook note a few weeks with the exact title of your blog post today. i empathize.

I can totally relate. Take all six camisoles. You'll probably need them!

...I'm not much help, am I?

I just moved into my dorm at college two days ago. College is EVERYTHING and MORE i've been YEARNING for the last four years. It just clicks with me. This is probably the age of my soul.
Anyway, I'm SO EXCITED for you to get to college. It's fantastic, really... and i've only been here for two days now... and I knew absolutely no one coming here.

Oh, and yeah... I definitely had Party in the USA on repeat while packing.

I still have a month before I go off to Uni but the packing thing is starting to worry me too. I just run over lists of things constantly!
Good luck with the camisole elimination attempts.

I seem to be the ONLY person who hadn't heard of 500 Days of Summer before it came out and everyone started talking about how incredible it was. But as soon as I find some money and time, I'll see it. :)

I don't leave for college until the end of September, so all of my friends are leaving me now. It really sucks. It's like everyone is moving on without me. I mean, I know I'm going soon too and I still have the other kids who are going to the same school, but still. It's weird.

Leah said...

Hayley. Sweetheart. You have TWO WALK-IN CLOSETS. You didn't realize you were a packrat?

Anyway. The trick is not to let your parents leave before you can unpack. That way, you can throw the things that absolutely cannot possibly fit in your drawers back in the car.

Scott said...

When I first packed to go to university, I packed everything I owned. Like, t-shirts I got when I was around 14, just because they were, say, a gift from my Grandmother, and my subconscious would feel like I was snubbing her if I didn't bring it. I see where you're coming from...

And I NEED to see 500 Days of Summer. Too bad living in rural Canada doesn't allow you to see trendy films whenever you'd please.

eibbore said...

Packing your life into a small amount of space is not something I particulary enjoy doing. Good luck.

I feel your packing pain. I leave for school on Thursday. I've got a stack of neatly packed stuff...and then some...not so neatly packed stuff. :P School is less than an hour away from home so I'm not even motivated to pack lighter because I know I'll be able to bring it all. But I've already filled one suitcase, primarily with sweatshirts...I <3 my sweatshirts.

Crystal said...

Before I left for college, I packed so much crap I didn't need or even use. Like hats (I was convinced I'd need both a costume pirate hat and an alpine hat) or art supplies (I thought, "When DON'T I use markers and charcoal and pastels?" Turns out, hardly ever).

My biggest over-packed item, though, was books and movies. Some books I wanted with me just for that homely feel and others I wanted because I use them a lot for reference. But for actual reading? I so didn't have time. I might've read Catcher in the Rye once the day I came back after winter break because I didn't have homework yet.

Movies weren't so bad because I could watch them while I did homework, but I still didn't need 30 of them. 10 would've worked out just as well.

My advice is to just try to think seriously about what you do and don't need. I understand bringing six white camisoles (I brought two pairs of black flip-flops and every pair of Converse I owned), but maybe just bring half, and then if, when at school, you realize you DO need all six, bring the other three back to school when go home, but make sure to bring some things back home, otherwise May will come and you'll realize you need two U-Haul trucks just to get everything home.

This is totally irrelevant to your post, but I'm watching Flight of the Conchords and Bret just sang "She's so hot. like a curry!" Just thought I'd mention it :).

Oh, I'm so jealous you saw 500 Days of Summer! I've been wanting to watch it for ages.

Who's the boom king?

Hahaha I did exactly the same thing yesterday evening. I started packing for my exchange year in the Uk (I'm from Berlin, in Germany) but then I got distracted and started blogging. I would really love it if you could a bit of it cause it sounds quite similar to your blog, it's hilarious but unfortunately it's in German. What a shame. Uh, I wish you good luck for college.

And now I go on packing instead of writing comments. ;) It's really nervracking espescially if you pack for such a long time.

Dude have you seen Brick?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the main guy and it's one of my top ten movies of all time. It's a 1940s film nour but set in a modern day high school and it's brilliant.

Take everything, you'll find a place for it.

That's terrible advice, isn't it? I'm a junior this year, and every single year, my mom comments on the amount of STUFF I'm taking. But it's worked every time so far, so just bring what you know you'll need and leave that one shirt that you haven't worn in a year, but you maaaay need at home. =)

You lost me with the camisoles predicament, that must be a girl thing. For me packing is a last minute exercise accomplished in under ten minutes. Although I have on rare occasion left behind something important as a result, so there you go. Zooey Deschanel is a goddess and always picks interesting films to do, I'm not surprised you loved the film.

Carly said...

You could take three with you and three at home! That way they're equal and bound not to feel left out :P

lindsey said...

Oh, Hayley! Sorry about having to leave your friends, but you are going to make SO many in college.

I'm really looking forward to 500DoS. Zooey Deschanel? Heck yes!

Packing isn't exactly one of my favorite activities.

My sister left for college yesterday. I miss her already, but I've only got two years left till I go too.

Have fun in college.

I read the first paragraph of your post, turned to my boyfriend and said, "I want to see 500 Days of Summer," as a response to his "What movie should we see?" question that he asked about 5 hours ago.

acroatic said...

Firstly, those are my exact sentiments about 500 Days Of Summer.
Secondly, I have the same problems with packing/packrat-ing.
Thirdly, Joesph Gordon-Lewitt... one of the best "sexy"'s ("sexies"?) this blog has seen. Except, of course, for this one (http://tinyurl.com/nwpl2c).

Oh yeah. Kicking it old-school, from April fifteenth.

Ditto with 500 days.
Ditto with packing. I'm not set to go to college for a few more years, but I've been emptying my closet nonetheless. I own too many lounging shirts and not enough shirts I'd actually wear out of the comfort on my own house. I found kindergarten stories, too. :O

My brother is leaving for college this week and I really don't know what I am going to do without him. I don't want to be an only child. I'm selfishly not helping him pack, because him procrastinating is helping me pretend he's not going.

On a side note, your tweet said you missed us. We love you! :)

Ravenclaw2313 said...

Packing for college is HARD. I always bring more things than I need, and collect more all the time. It seems that everything can be justified. That shirt that you haven't worn in four years is obviously vitally important to your existence.

All I can say if you have only just discovered it then you don't need it. Also if your parents are agreeable take what you want and if it won't pack into your room send it back. This method works well for me because it allows me to have a few things that I just suddenly desire; like that whole collection of embroidery floss for bracelets that I haven't touched in years. Everyone ends up with stuff they don't need the trick is to learn from it and not bring that next time. Best of luck on the camisoles.

agioacchini said...

I know how the packing goes. I'm leaving in two weeks and my mom's on me every day about getting things organized.

Ack, this is the second day in a row I've had to remove my post because of a typo and repost it. They should call me Anal Girl.

Anyway, 500 Days of Summer was amazing. I loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 10 Things I Hate About You and I loved him even more in 500 Days of Summer.

Good luck packing up for college. I'm sure you'll sort everything out.

I'm a total pack rat too & whenever I'm trying to make room in my closet for new clothes it kills me to send which ever ones I choose down the hall to my little sister. I also have various papers from my entire life that I feel if I throw away I will need one day. I'll be you next year when packing for college. So, you have to make it through this for the sake of both of us. haha. :D
