Eleven-year-old at the Dentist's

It's really funny how sometimes "writing" can mean pounding away at a keyboard, chomping away at a pen, filling pages and pages with words... and other times it can mean staring quizzically at a flashing cursor while watching Matilda, pretending like it'll benefit your creative process. What's sad is that no matter how many excuses I devise in my head, in reality, Matilda has absolutely nothing to do with my novel. My friend Leah compared the feel of my narration to the tone of the movie's narrator, but at the end of the day, one is a family flick about the power of reading and telekinesis, and the other is not. This knowledge did not stop me, however, from justifying just ten more minutes, then just ten more, until I'd watched the whole thing and written no more than a paragraph. Sigh.

I wish the love I have for my story and its characters was enough incentive to just get the damn thing typed up in order. My excuse for having no product used to be that I didn't know what happened next. Now I could talk about the plot's goings-on and the inner-workings of every single character's mind for a week straight, yet I'm finding it nearly impossible to sort through my mental clutter and organize it to make sense to readers. To me, the fact that the one guy is a catalyst is obvious, because I know his past and the decisions he's made, but if I don't record them correctly, the reader will just think he's an insignificant background person everyone else has a habit of discussing. Or if I go into every minor character's parents and grade school education and first job and annoying habits, I'll be spinning a confusing web no one will want to bother to decode.

I was thinking about all this, among other things, as I got my teeth cleaned at the dentist's yesterday afternoon. A pretty Indian woman was dragging a pointy metal stick along the inside of my mouth, making a hanger-against-an-iron-clothes-rack sound of death, and I closed my twitching eyes. "What happened here?" said another dentist in the next room. A feminine-sounding young boy's voice responded, "Okay, so I was riding my bike up next to the school-- there's a school by my house, and it has swings, so I was going to go play on the swings-- and the cement on the sidewalk went up like this, so I thought I could jump over it, but I fell off...." I smiled with the unoccupied part of my face. I'd met that kid, JJ, in the waiting room. He had told me the same story.

JJ and I hit it off after he complimented my hair, comparing its color to that which he called "the puffy pink stuff they put in attics." I laughed and told him it's called insulation, but for years I just thought of it as sharp cotton candy. He proceeded to tell me about going into fifth grade, his teachers' names, how the classes were divided up. I sprouted out a couple of elementary school memories for JJ, told him I'm going to college, and began a detailed rapport about the merits of trapper keepers. The conversation was endearing and nonchalant, and very reminiscent of the days when it was appropriate to look around a waiting room for the kid closest to your age and strike up a friendship. Along with my nerves about dentists, I was disappointed to see JJ go when I got called back for my appointment.

Now, in response to his story, JJ's dentist said something terribly stupid over in their room. Something, if I'm not mistaken, like "Wowiekabootles! Let's get those teethies checked out, Mr. Man!" I flinched, and the woman flossing my teeth asked if she was hurting me. I gargled the closest thing to "No, I'm fine" you can say when a gloved hand is inside your mouth. The only thing hurting me was how terribly a lot of adults misunderstand pre-teens.

Why is it that when a person hits adulthood, they suddenly lose all ability to conceptualize their eleven-year-old feelings? Fifth grade. It's the year you buy markers for school instead of crayons. Tests start to require studying. Somebody in the class will take to connecting everything to sex, and you'll pretend to know what it means, but refuse to repeat its meaning when asked for confirmation. Talk of who's wearing a bra will spread like wildfire, until boys reach out and snap any strap they see outlined on a girl's back. I can list detail upon detail from fifth grade. My homeroom teacher's name was Mrs. Evans, and she was loud-mouthed and had curly brown hair. I sat with Jess and The Most Popular Girl in one seat on the bus, and together we sang NSYNC songs about things we didn't understand. I realized I was bad at math when I decided not to learn long division. I was the third girl in our grade to get my period, I started growing out my bangs, I was a fairy for Halloween. Maybe all these memories will evaporate in the next ten years, but right now, I remember eleven.

JJ from the dentist's office is, more or less, the reason I want to finish this novel. Although it's not intended for eleven-year-old boys, it's a similar situation, in that the novel is definitely a preservation of my early teenage years, and I want to make sure I can seal the lid of those memories tightly before they go sour. When I was eleven, I knew I wanted to be a writer, I was a vegetarian, and I had the same three close friends I have now. I was a person, and an observant one. I never want to be that man who thinks fifth graders want to hear things like "wowiekabootles."

Sexy: Ben & Jerry's Half-Baked ice cream. I don't love ice cream, but I love chunks of cookie dough and brownies.
Unsexy: Editing through twenty minutes of footage, like I had to tonight for tomorrow's "fiveawesomeboys" video. It turned out to be two amusing minutes, after at least an hour of cutting and viewing and clicking.

I remember when I was eleven. I was in the sixth grade, hated my teacher, and almost failed my "advanced" class... whoops.

I hate that dentist-cleaning-teeth sound. It's more painful than getting a cavity filled. Then again, you're on meds when you get cavities filled.

See ya tomorrow.

AND OMIGOD, YOUR NEED TO WRITE HAS REMINDED ME THAT I HAVE A THREE-PAGE ROUGH DRAFT DUE TOMORROW. Crap, there goes my night.

All this hearing about your book gets me excited. I've been reading your blogs for awhile, and they are super entertaining. Your book(s) I know will be even better. :)

I love your dentist story about JJ. Those kinds of random life-happenings are the best.

Oh, and thank you for the NSYNC link. It brought back memories of home-made music videos containing original choreography. Oh God.

Hayley, you need to finish this book ASAYouCan so I can buy it.

"Wowiekabootles!" is my new favorite word, and I will now be using it in conversations.

I never want you to be that or any other man Hayley, it'd be a sad loss to your gender.

Happy Cheese and Onions Hayley. (I don't know)

That is all.

Blegh, I hate it when adults are patronizing to kids. I remember being eleven! I was definitely a person who understood enough of the world around me to not want to hear "wowiekabootles" ever. I also remember hating being patronized. So I guess not much has changed there.

I love your brain. Let's talk more.
Eleven was also the age when you anxiously waited for your Hogwarts letter, and it didn't come. Sigh.

It's weird for me sometimes to read your blog and realize I have almost the same memories and feelings. I remember being eleven and thinking I was so cool when I was allowed to wear jeans for the first time--til I wore them on a day where we played water games and they felt like death and I was wearing a white shirt (I wasn't wearing bras yet >.>) Thatttt was a great moment of my life.

God, that dentist-cleaning-teeth noise sounds like death. I hate the dentist mainly because of that noise.

I hope you're able to find the motivation to get your book written--I'm dying to be able to read it once it's published because I believe it will definitely be published =]

Though I also hope you don't become one of those men because it may hurt the future of fiveawesomegirls....

And I don't usually comment (no idea why...) but reading your blogs are always the highlight of my days. You are one of my favorite people ever and I wish I was more like you.

Oh memories, 5th grade was brilliant for me. I had such a lovely teacher who used to spend most of the class reading us wonderful stories.

And she had a BIRD! He used to fly around the classroom and sit at various students desks. He also used to get quite *ahem* ‘intimate’ with his cage, which was hilarious for a bunch of 11yo kids. His name was Jerry.

Thank you Hayley, for prompting me to relive some old school memories.

Good luck with the book

this has probably been my favorite entry of yours. i'd go into more detail about how i had the same expereience with a girl i was "leading" at camp (the ratio of ages was the same, though), but as of right now i have less than 6 hours to look presentable.

sorry to bug you, but do you have any haley hoover-tastic advice on convincing a best guy friend's parents (and your own, as a matter of fact) that you have no romantic feelings toward one another? i'm already concocting a fake boyfriend using this character's name: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QZEKwrsGWs

If I have to keep this up [using musical character names, since neither of our parents know any musical characters other than 'maria and tony'] for another year or so, I'm going to wind up having boyfriends named Moritz.

To bring it back to you, JJ sounded adorable. And I hate going to the dentist lol. "Wowiekabootles".

Hayley, I don't know what it was about this entry that is making my fingers type, but I knew I HAD to leave a comment and applaud your superb writing style. This entry, I don't know. I GET it. I've wondered about this adult loss of conceptualization before, and reading this I was just like "yeah... yeah! exactly!" I don't know what I'm trying to say, but I really feel like if I knew you IRL we'd be friends. Or maybe everyone who reads your blog and watches your videos feels this way. Rambling over, lovely post.

You don't love ice cream? But... how? This is almost beyond my comprehension. Actually, the girl who lived on my hall last year who straight up disliked ice cream, she is beyond my comprehension.

Dude, now that I think about it, I was eleven through most of sixth grade, rather than fifth. And I distinctly remember a trip to Yosemite where we alternated between No Strings Attached and the Parent Trap soundtrack, exclusively. We also had intense debates about Togo's vs. Subway. I still agree with my eleven year old self, my awesome taste in music has continued and I'm still friends with both the girls I built vaugely deformed snowmen with. (We're from the Bay Area -- we don't get snow, so we don't get snowman-making practice.) That makes me happy.

And I think I'll have some ice cream now.

I'm making the 15 mile drive tomorrow to Chipotle Mexican Grill for a burrito. I was wondering what was in the hayleyghoover style of burrito. Lots of ingredients to choose from and I like to add something different each time I am there. So Hayley, what do you like in your burrito?

Also, the thing that bugs me about the dentist is the smells of all the chemicals they use in the office. It's worse than a hospital.

So. When I clicked the N*SYNC link and the song started playing, I began singing along as if my sister and I had choreographed our dance to "Pop" just yesterday.

Thanks for the trip down memory-lane and for writing this blog :)

Today I showed my friend a entry of yours and, after reading it, he said "I want to be her... or at least be her friend."

As a reader, I appreciate when authors don't explore all details of every minor character's life, lest I get lost and lose interest in the the story. Give me the details when it's relevant, otherwise get to the damn point. I suppose it all depends on your target audience. *shrugs*

Not sure why you think "adults" don't understand eleven-year-olds. Some people are patronizing to whoever they speak to, child or adult, especially doctors. I remember being eleven and popping a few bra straps, as well as everything else you mentioned. Just because I got older, I didn't forget these things. Where's the logic in assuming a person gets less intelligent with experience? We don't just get Alzheimer's at 28.

I remember fifth grade too. I remember fourth grade even better. That was the year in my school that everyone started wearing bras, despite the fact that no one needed one yet. I still remember the day that evil hoe Hollis pulled on the stretchy back of my dress on picture day and whispered to her friends, "She doesn't." I knew what she meant, and it still bugs me that I pretended not to hear her. I really should have laid the smack down.

I had to reassure the lovely gal at the dentist the other day that she wasn't hurting me several times over.

It's the sound of metal scraping against teeth... I shudder just thinking about it.

My ears are sensitive to strange things. Sensitive in that I physically react just thinking about the sounds.

Aaaah. Being eleven was great. I remember being popular in fifth grade and doing what all the other kids did, which consisted of three things: reciting lyrics of the latest Backstreet Boys hit, trading Pokemon cards in the cafeteria, and making sure your new Livestrong wristband was clearly visible.

I hope you're done with your novel ASAP. People *Including me* are more than eager to start reading it. I've seen your 5AG video with the reading from your second novel so many times, I finally decided to Bookmark it. Yup, "Hayley's Reading" and "John Green's Twitter" are now side by side. (:

"Falling in love. You know what your heart is for? Pumping blood through your veins. If your heart really devoted time to deciding who you wanted to have sex with or live with, there would be no blood flow to your brain and your eyes and sexual organs would have nothing to do. There's no falling involved - it's a decision." - HGH.

*Sigh* <3 Amen.

Maybe you already know the absolutely fantastic song that is "storytelling" by Belle and Sebastian (oi the puns I could get out of this one...). If not, here they are:

Picture a scene in your mind
Looks at all the people and take note of the setting behind
Listen, watch, and wait
A plot begins to take shape
There's a story
And then characters will come to you
Relating events as they choose to
But all their words and actions come entirely from you

If you're a storyteller you might think you're without responsibility
And you can lead your characters anywhere you want
You have immunity

Have you considered the way
People might react to all the things that your characters say?
And are their actions hand in hand with what you want to portray?
Are you sick?
Are you crippled? Insane?
Expressing the desires that daren't speak their name?
Are you the one to be blamed?

Now you're a storyteller you might think you are without responsibility
But in directions, actions and words
Cause and effect
You need consistency

How can you finish the tale?
Lives which have played a part
Are summarized from the very start
And episodes left out to make it all go our way
"It's a might big world
Some of it I've seen
But mostly I've only heard
And stories are all fiction from their moment of birth"

You're just a storyteller
You're not trying to escape responsibility
If we believe you then you're successful
But you don't make claims of verity

Eleven for me was about glitter, was about secretly still playing with my barbie dolls (I liked using them as characters in my story-telling), skateboards and pelting the boys in my street with small stones, (We had this continuous raging war). I miss eleven. Eleven was a helluva lot better than twelve, because you had that 'goingtohighschoolnextyear' and 'headoftheschoolshouldbemature' pressure. (Or at least I did, I'm Australian!) Going to the dentist sounds like fun. :P You make everything sound like fun Hayley.

Oh and thanks, you gave me something to read on the train as I was coming home from uni!

After reading that, I worry that I have never known how to talk to an eleven-year-old, even when I was eleven. Well, I hope you can continue working on your novel after that run-in at the dentist's office.

I eat the ice cream for the brownie chunks. Totally. Cookie dough is pretty good too, but the dough they put in the ice cream isn't up to the standard of my mum's homemade cookie dough so it's hard to get too excited about it.

I've noticed that many, many adults don't know how to talk to kids of any age. When you're five, they talk to you in baby talk even though you are perfectly capable of understanding adult speech. When you're eight, they switch to something that sounds like it came off one of those awful motivational posters, and you think they're funny. By middle school it's worn oh-so-thin. And when you get to high school you suddenly become a public nuisance and people aren't willing to smile at you as you're walking down the street anymore, because you're not little and cute, you're kind of threatening.

Sigh.

Oh...and I didn't get my period till seventh grade. After it came, I wished it would have waited longer. My aunt says, "A period is one of those things that everyone can't wait to get but when it comes they realize that it's not all it's cracked up to be."

Fifth grade...I had Mrs. Keely, bangs and I'm pretty sure I rolled my socks (::shame::). I had been living in Germany for two years already so we were kind of behind on all things popular. The only time we got new music was when a new kid moved into our small "town." I'm pretty sure in fifth grade I was playing outside almost everyday, re-enacting scenes from Princess Bride with my friends and sister, turning the lights off in the girls' bathroom while trying to find bloody mary in the mirror and learning the words to Waterfalls by TLC with my fellow girl scouts. Oh yeah, I won the Story Reading Contest and got to represent my school at Regionals. I read a section from Ghosts Don't Eat Potatoe Chips by Debby Dadey and everyone told me I sounded just like the kids at the end of Reading Rainbow.

A lot has changed and a lot of years have gone by (14 to be exact), but I will never call someone "Mr. Man!"

I remember eleven.

My best friend was a girl named Grace, she practically lived at my house. My teacher was Mrs. Ralston, getting divorced, with two kids, Spencer and Noah. She always drank diet coke with lime - does anyone else remember that? I specifically remember because this kid, Zac, would always steal her coke and hide it somewhere in the room when she would leave it lying around. We found one that he hid mid-year on the last day of school, half empty and now home to a few... less-than=pleasurable creatures. I remember feeling contented, with friendships I thought could transcend middle school, even graduation. They didn't, of course, but it was fun.

This is five, six years ago, mind, so still semi-fresh in my memories. But I hope to never forget that childlike wonder that my teen angst has long-since hardened.

Eleven... Eight years ago my teacher was Mrs Turner, her dad was a police officer (i don't know why i remember that)
The trio of me and my two best friends since the age of four, Peter and Philip, grew into a group of six with the arrival of Ben, mike and Jorell.
I had an awkward-holding-at-arms-length-dance with my first girlfriend, Kimberly, at the christmas party.
In one science class peter leaned back on his chair and broke a test tube, our science teacher was Mr Feilding; the PE teacher.
I was in the "advanced" maths group who got to learn algebra and took the level 6 exam (everyone else took level 5), i was the only boy in the group with Kimberly, Ruth and Annabel. The first practice test we took, we needed 22 marks to pass. Ruth got 21, i got 20, Annabel got 19, Kimberly got 16, she cried.

I still remember bits of my childhood so clearly, and when i talk about stuff with the few friends i have from back then, it always amazes me that people don't remember stupid little stuff that i seem to remember.

Anonymous said...

I can COMPLETELY realate to your need to preserve your childhood memories. Gosh, maybe thats why i feel so inclined to keep writing journals.

I also know what you mean by remembering the way you and everyother pre-teen thought back then. I used to get asked back to a lot of babysitting jobs because I remembered how I wanted to be treated when i was that age. Being spoken to like a child whatever age you are is always patronising.

Being 11... Ah, yes.

I had a wonderful teacher, Mrs. King whom I still see from time to time when I visit Texas. I started wearing bras that year. Ah, to be 11 again.

I hope you can get your book-writing-mojo back soon. If not, you can always start a memoir. Hayley Hoover - Love, Loss, and the takeover of YouTube.

It's strange, but I think I've blocked out most of my childhood/adolescence memories. I honestly can't remember much about being 11 and it was only about 10 years ago. My memory cannot possibly by THAT bad! Ahh!

It's scary though, because I found myself treating the 10-13 year olds at the archeology camp I worked at this summer like they were little kids. I had no connection with them and I felt pretty bad about it after. Hmmm...

Luckily for evey person out there like me...there's another person out there like you who will make adolescence not so sucky. :)

Two things. One, if you're feeling blocked in your writing but know the whole story try finding a willing victim (or if necessary an unwilling one I suppose) and tell them the whole thing aloud. And then go off immediately and try writing again.

Second, unless you're Ray Bradbury you're going to forget a lot of that childhood detail. If you haven't been making notes already, you should start. Of course with the amount you're already doing this may require giving up many hours previously devoted to sleep!

Well, I hate to say it...but you start to forget things about your life the older you get. You remember 5th grade because it's been 7 years. Try 22. Sure, you remember some stuff...like your stupid boyfriend Richard "cheating" on you by "going with" an older woman...er 6th grader. I don't know...even when you want to hang on to some of that innocence, whimsy, and understanding of childhood...it starts to fade.

I think 11 is already erasing from my mind, even though I remember much earlier years. Maybe this is because 11 was a boring year for me, maybe I wasn't a fan of 11, or maybe I'm just not trying hard enough. What I do remember about 11 though, was that I couldn't wait for GOF to come out, and was sad when my Hogwarts letter never came.

In fifth grade, I was the fat girl. How fun. I remember cheating on these stupid newspapers that were about abstinence and staying away from drugs. I got caught, and the teacher called my parents. Then, the WHOLE fifth grade class had to go to this assembly where they showed us these horrible videos about STDs and addiction. All because of me. Yeah, fifth grade sucked.
